Heroes of RPGs: West End Games

Welcome back to Heroes of RPG's, this time I'm doing an entire company, the creators of the D6 system, and publishers of the Star Wars RPG, West End Games.

They were founded in New York City in 1974 by Daniel Scott Palter, and perhaps this Heroes should be about him, but he has a life story far more expansive than just Role Playing Games, and much of the story of the company is his anyway.

West End Games was named after the bar in which the meeting that finalized its founding occurred: the West End Bar near Colombia University. The company published straight wargame designs initially, including some of Palter's own designs such as Marlborough at Blenheim (1979). And some licenced products, such as Star Trek based games. . . .

Retro RPG: Dark Sun

This week, not an RPG, but a AD&D campaign setting, Dark Sun.
Dark Sun is an original Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting set in the fictional, post-apocalyptic desert world of Athas. Dark Sun featured an innovative metaplot, influential art work, dark themes, and a genre-bending take on traditional fantasy role-playing. The product line began with the original Dark Sun Boxed Set released for AD&D 2nd Edition in 1991, originally ran until 1996, and was one of TSR's most successful releases.
Dark Sun deviated from the feudalistic backdrops of its Tolkienesque pseudo-medieval contemporaries, such as Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms, in favor of a composite of dark fantasy, planetary romance, and the Dying Earth subgenre. Dark Sun's designers presented a savage, magic-ravaged desert world where resources are scarce and survival is a daily struggle. The traditional fantasy races and character classes were altered or omitted to better suit the setting's darker themes. Dark Sun differs further in that the game has no deities, arcane magic is reviled for causing the planet's current ecological fragility, and psionics are extremely common. with an established metaplot out of the box.

Well, I've decided to do stats today instead of a review of the second part, so today we've added a couple of updates based on the subject of yesterdays review, Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 12: Ghosts of Geonosis Part 1. Today we've added Klik-Klak & Saw Gerrera (as of Rebels) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section of the Site.
What's a little odd, is that I used to try to avoid doing characters, as they are much harder to do than ships or equipment, but there are plenty of days recently when the updates have just been characters.

BeyondD6

If you pay attention to our Youtube channel, you'll know that for the past 2 months we've been working on an online system to play Star Wars D6 using. It includes a character creator, and system to allow online play. This system we've provisionally titled BeyondD6.
Although we've got a load of plans to add other features to the system, it already is capable of aiding in Tabletop gaming and online play by moderating Dice rolls and sharing documents and information to players.
So we started Alpha testing the system last week with a new group of players that we're introducing to the West End Games version of the Star Wars RPG through the system, and it's providing interesting feedback and helping us fix a whole load of bugs.
Well, we've decided that for the Beta testing we're going to open the system up to a bunch more players. In fact, to anyone who wants to take part. There will be a short survey before the beta testing begins (which may not be for a month or two), to help us identify the hardware and platform you'll be using the system with (to aid with bug testing) and your familiarity with the D6 system (to help us make the system easy to use for new users).
So if you're interested in taking part, then please head on over to BeyondD6.com and register your interest.
        Many thanks in advance.

Retro RPG: Cosmic Encounter

Not an RPG at all, but a board game, but it's a geeky one, so it counts.
Cosmic Encounter is a science fiction–themed strategy board game designed by "Future Pastimes" (collectively, Peter Olotka, Jack Kittredge and Bill Eberle, with Bill Norton) and originally published by Eon Games in 1977. In it, each player takes the role of a particular alien species, each with a unique power to break one of the rules of the game, trying to establish control over the universe. In 1992, a new edition of Cosmic Encounter won the Origins Award for Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Boardgame of 1991 and placed 6th in the Deutscher Spiele Preis. The game was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame in 1997.

Cosmic Encounter is a dynamic and social game, with players being encouraged to interact, argue, form alliances, make deals, double-cross, and occasionally work together to protect the common good.

Cyberpunk 30th Anniversary

I have to admit only playing it once, but I was a massive fan of the style of the original Cyberpunk RPG, and the updated version Cyberpunk 2020 (although I never bothered with Cyberpunk 0.3, or CyberGeneration) by R Talsorian Games. The style I particularly liked, with a Sci-fi edge that many cyberpunk games (including Shadowrun which I adored also) didn't have.
Whereas most games of the Genre were in a crumbling society, Cyberpunks world was definitely super high tech, with Chrome cyberware evolving at an incredible rate, with travel available across the solar system, and a massive sub-class which didn't get to take advantage of the comforts that technology was giving the rich.
I loved poring the sourcebooks as they came out, seeing the imagination that was involved as the world began to include powered armour, full cybernetic body replacements, etc. It looked great, and it looked kind of sexy.
Well, it's been 30 years since the first edition came out, and with hype building towards the Cyberpunk 2077 game, and a new version of the RPG, Cyberpunk Red, now in the works. R Talsorian games has began a week celebrating their RPG, check it out on their site.

THE FANTASY TRIP – Old-School Roleplaying!

No review today, as the real world is getting in the way and I don't have any time. But wanted to take a moment to mention The Fantasy Trip. It's the early RPG by Steve Jackson, which I mentioned in passing in my Heroes of RPG's on him.
Well, turns out he's manages to regain the rights, and has been kickstarting it, very successfully by the looks of things. So it's going to get a reprint, which is pretty interesting as it was one of the first games to look at RPG's in a slightly different way, introducing such things as points building rather than random rolls which had been used before.
But it also looks like they're opening the system up for others to begin publishing expansions and supplements for, which feels either blindly optimistic, or a bit of a cash grab to me (I haven't looked deeply into their licencing, but it appears that there's no quality control, which could turn their webstore of The Fantasy Trip material into a morass of poorly written, click bait titled trash). Anyway, if you're interested, read some more here.

Rise of the Separatists

I find it a little odd the way that Fantasy Flight are handling different Era's within their Star Wars RPG. Just putting out a sourcebook for them, whereas I feel that they would be better treated as separate games.
Playing within the Old Republic, or The Clone Wars, are very different in play style to playing within the Imperial era. Playing as Jedi the guardians of peace, or as a fringer alongside a generally more benevolent Republic, rather than the oppressive Empire hunting down the last of the Jedi, and crushing all criminal activity.
But, anyway, here's their latest book, Rise of the Separatists, dealing with the Clone Wars.

"For generations, the Jedi Knights have been guardians of peace and justice in the Republic. But now they face a challenge like never before. With the Battle of Geonosis, the Clone Wars have begun. Battles rage across the galaxy as the Jedi and the Grand Army of the Republic fight back against the sinister agents and indefatigable droid armies of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Meanwhile, the diplomats and representatives of the Galactic Senate work for peace and forge political alliances. Amid the chaos, looters, salvagers, and other fringers profit from the detritus of war, or simply try to survive.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Rise of the Separatists, a new Era Sourcebook for the Star Wars™ Roleplaying Game!

Rise of the Separatists explores the early days of the Clone Wars, and is fully compatible with every Star Wars Roleplaying Game line, including Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny!"

Not much of an update today, since the episode we reviewed yesterday, Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 6: The Last Battle, mainly involved leftovers from the Clone Wars, there wasn't much we hadn't seen during that series. However, we have added Colicoids Destroyer Droid (Droideka) to the Star Wars D/6 Droids Section today, that somehow we'd missed while doing the Clone Wars Series.

Well, we're back with Season 3 of Rebels, and we've done a bunch of stats today based on the subject of yesterdays review of, Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 Episode 1: Steps into Darkness. Today we've added Industrial Automaton DTS-series Dismantler Droid to the Star Wars D/6 Droids Section, Kassius Konstantine (Imperial Admiral) and Arihnda Pryce (Imperial Governor) to the Star Wars D/6 Characters Section, Reklam Station to the Star Wars D/6 Planets and Places section, and the BlasTech DL-44 LE heavy blaster pistol to the Star Wars D/6 Weapons Section of the Site.

After typing up each of the stats, I always load them to make sure they're looking okay (for example I forgot to add Admiral Konstantines Picture today), but I noticed an advert below claiming that Britain would be abandoned. Britain being my home, I wondered what the heck they were talking about, so clicked on the ad, and it was for a Bitcoin rip off called "Britcoin" (which I actually found a fairly smart name), but it wouldn't let me know any more because I was in the wrong country.
Given the product claims to be British, I love that the creators (who undoubtedly aren't British) don't let Brits access it.
Oh, and unless you haven't already guessed it, Britcoin is 100% guaranteed by me to be a scam.

The Kingdom of Jaresha

Monk2024 has sent through an updated version of his Chainsword Class Gunship, which I've replace the original with. he's also sent through the background for his Kingdom of Jaresha faction.

The Kingdom of Jaresha

History: the seeds of what became the kingdom were planted in 91885 CE (Common Era) by the arrivals of the first humans to the planet Jaxalon in the waning years of the Jaxalon-Illastron War,the humans led by the Prophetess Jaresha and her consort General Kem Brennan provided the fighting spirit the Jaxalon lacked and in exchange received their advanced technology, over the course of the war the illastron were exterminated, their droid armies deactivated or destroyed and their slave races liberated, however many thought too much freedom was bad for them and pledged themselves to the humans, when the Jaxalon abandoned their sky cities for isolation deep below the ground the humans took control, the birth of King Brennan a century later cemented human control of the planet.

Over the next eighty centuries the Jareshans conquered the rest of their home galaxy, some races resisted such as the Rok'Saur however they could not prevail for long. A far more troubling threat of that introduced by those Jaxalon who had taken up the path of violence, a series of brutal wars were required to end this threat the most recently of which was in 99763 CE and resulted in the destruction of the second replacement of the Jareshan moon Nuada.
