The Durandal was designed solely for the purpose of destroying runways. The
bomb first penetrates the runway surface and then a delayed explosion
buckles a large portion of the runway - damage much more difficult to repair
than the crater of a general-purpose bomb. Note that a bomb hit toward the
end of a runway might not destroy enough pavement to put the runway
completly out of action.
