-Darth Traya speaking to Atris

Jedi Master Atris was a member of the Jedi High Council and the successor of Kreia as the Archives Master during and after the Mandalorian Wars. She wished to go off with the Exile to the Wars, but feared being ostracized by the Council for doing so. She was angry at the Exile for breaking her belief in the perfection of the Jedi way, and wished for the Exile to be killed upon her return to trail after the Mandalorian War.

After the Jedi Civil War, Atris called for a convocation of Jedi on the Miraluka colony world of Katarr. The Jedi traveled there in secret, and kept the confidentiality of the meeting, but Atris did not. She let the presence of the meeting leak out, hoping that the Sith would reveal themselves.
When they did in the form of Darth Nihilus, they surpassed all expectations - including Atris' own - when Nihilus killed every being on the planet by feeding on their Force energy. The Jedi found their deaths on Katarr. Atris, not having gone, survived.

Atris took refuge in the polar region of Telos' icecap. She took with her many of the Jedi and Sith holocrons stored at Coroscant, along with all the records and relics that survived Malak's bombardment of the Dantooine enclave. There, she trained a group of Echani half-sisters in the hopes of using them as a mechanism to prevent Jedi from falling to the dark side and wreaking havoc on the galaxy. In order to more fully understand Dark Jedi and Sith, she studied the Sith holocrons that she had taken from the Jedi library on Coroscant. Atris planned on eventually rebuilding the Jedi order, but she overestimated her resistance to the dark side, becoming corrupted by her own arrogance and by delving into the forbidden knowledge of the Sith holocrons.

As she privately studied the holocrons to try to understand the Exile's motivations, she became more and more fanatic in her view of the perfect Jedi. The pressure built up and finally exploded when Kreia coerced Atris to cease her self-denials and accept her new persona. Part of the reason Atris exiled herself and her Echani Handmaidens was to more easily maintain her perfect world in isolation. As Kreia once said, Atris had no one to blame but herself. No one forced her into the choices she made, not the Jedi, not Traya, and certainly not the Exile.

Upon learning that Atris had taken up the dark path, Kreia informed her former apprentice, Darth Nihilus of the existence of a Jedi Academy on Telos. Nihilus would go there, hoping to feed on the Jedi, and only find Atris. The trip there would be worthless for Nihilus, and he would starve after making the long trip and finding no sustenance. Kreia felt proud at her plan to remove two enemies with one stroke.

Atris eventually fought with the Exile, who won the duel and spared Atris' life. She sealed her in a cell to await judgment of the Jedi, and led her down the path of redemption. Something Atris never believed the Exile could have done.
