Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Unfinished Episode 2: In Search of the Crystal

What is it ? : Following on from the last Unfinished Episode, Anakin and Obi-Wan are following their lead to find the Sugi and the weapons deal that is going down, they find an Amani village and are attacked, but defend themselves and scare the Amani off. Following their trail, they camp down for the night and discuss Ahsoka's departure from the Jedi Order, and whether Anakin has failed as a master. When they awake the next morning they have been surrounded and they are disarmed and taken to the Sugi base, which is landed starship.
Once aboard they pretend to be buyers for the same weapon they know that Dooku is buying, but Dooku promises the Sugi that they will get what is coming to them from Grievous when he arrives, which they take to be an offer of money rather than the threat it so obviously is.
So Anakin and Obi-Wan are thrown in jail, they escape with ease and fight their way through the ship, regaining their lightsabers. But just as they are about to leave, they discover a massive Kyber Crystal which is the weapon being dealt, so decide they're going to steal the ship with the Crystal aboard.

High Points : A nice solid action episode, with some good dialogue (I personally loved Obi-Wan sarcastically commenting that Air Vents are not a good place to hide, because they visit them on every ship they board, and they're never a good place to hide).

The section of dialogue that especially impressed me was the discussion between Anakin and Obi-Wan regarding Ahsoka's departure from the Jedi Order, how Anakin is angry about it, recognising that the Order failed Ahsoka and didn't believe her, and feeling that he personally has failed. Obi-Wan doesn't believe that Anakin has failed, but comes to agree that he would feel like he failed should Anakins behavior reflect badly on him. . .

Low Points : The storyline starts to fall apart a little, what seemed like an insurrection being organised on Utapau, with the Sugi seemingly supplying weapons to the Amani, so the Amani could improve their second class citizen status on the planet they've immigrated to. But this turns into Utapau just being used as a site for a weapons deal between Dooku and the Sugi. The only way this makes sense is if the Amani are the actual owners of the Crystal, and using the Sugi as middlemen to find a buyer, but if this is the truth, the episode fails to mention it.

When the Sugi think that Anakin and Obi-Wan are buyers for the crystal, they happily try to get more money from Dooku, who threatens them by saying they will get what's coming to them when Grievous arrives! The Sugi take this as a legitimate offer of more cash, rather than the threat that they will all be killed by Dooku's pet cyborg. You'd think by now, Dooku's reputation would have spread, and everyone would know not to try to make deals with him.

So what do you really think ? : There's a lot to like in this episode, even if the whole thing is in desperate need of a script edit, the storyline is a little shaky, and doesn't hold together very well. But the dialogue pop's with wisecracks and excellent characterisation, and taking the time to deal with Ahsoka's departure is excellent, because it's only right after 5 seasons, that they should have to take some time to deal with this. But overall this episode looks to be part of an interesting and very watchable storyline, and it is a pity it never got finished.

Final Words : The Ahsoka discussion places this episode at the start of the Sixth Season, as Anakin is lashing out emotionally throughout, and the emotional wounds are still raw. I would love to see a similar conversation between Anakin and Amidala, but I think that's probably hoping too much for these unfinished episodes. I'm definitely looking forwards to seeing how this storyline plays out.

Score : 7/10
