Darth Vader: Issue 29: The Shadows Shadow: Techno Re-Union

What is it ? : Vader is in his meditation chamber, and remembers Obi-Wan telling him only Sith deal in absolutes, and agrees, because he is a Sith.
Elsewhere on the Executor, Ochi arrives on a shuttle, with Queens Handmaiden Dorme, masquerading as Sabe and make their way to Sabe's quarters to look for clues as to where she is. While they are searching, and discussing how power corrupts, and Sabe has been given power, two Stormtroopers, Sabe's personal guards arrive. Dorme questions them as Sabe, demanding to know who they informed of her travel plans, and what they said as she herself tries to find those plans out without revealing that she doesn't know them.
On Brentaal IV Sabe watches Jul Tambor talking to locals, promising that his family has not forgotten them unlike the Skakoan Council which replaced them. Assassin Droids from the Droid Crush attack, and Sabe saves his life, pretending to want to trade with his faction, but her identity is revealed by Gee Ninety, who worked as part of Vaders team of mercenaries against Crimson Dawn. But Jul Tambor already knew her identity. She explains that he must stop what he is doing, as provoking Vader will just lead to a slaughter of those he intends to protect, describing the deaths of the Amidalans on Polis Massa.
Back on the Executor, Dorme finishes retrieving data on Jul Tambor from the computer systems, when Admiral Piett tells her (as Sabe) that she has been summoned by Vader. Attending, she finds the two Stormtroopers she accused of leaking information, and Vader expects her to kill them, but he also sets them against her. She defeats them, but leaves them alive, and Vader says this proves that she is not Sabe, but she responds that Sabe wouldn't have killed them either.
Vader tells her that she no longer knows who Sabe is, and we see Sabe on Brentaal IV standing over the body of Jul Tambor with a smoking blaster hole in his chest armour.

High Points : The idea that Sabe is now killing people, to protect others from Vaders retribution is an interesting one. Stopping those who would do good, because their actions will lead to the deaths of far more innocents. This treats Vader more like a force of nature, there is no way that she can stop him, but she can protect others from him by avoiding him becoming angered at them. A brilliant idea, except that two issues ago he was dying and she saved his life, when she easily could have put an end to him.

Low Points : While it's entertaining that Dorme managed to masquerade as Sabe, due to them both being physically similar to Padme, the Handmaidens were similar not identical. But I suppose that the guards aren't that familiar with Sabe, as she only joined up recently, so as long as Dorme looks fairly close and has Ochi telling everyone that it's Sabe, it might work.

So what do you really think ? : Jul Tambor is an interesting character, and although I wonder if for all his appearance as a protector of his people if he's just in it for the power his family once had, it's cool for a potential Rebel leader to be the grandson of one of the Confederacy leadership. I'd always wondered if former members of the Confederacy joined the Rebellion, as the Empire is just their enemy the Republic under a new title (I was going to say new leadership, but Palpatine remained leader throughout). After all, the Confederacy was just fighting for the freedom to leave the Republic, so while portrayed as the bad guys, they were just being manipulated by the Sith, the same as the Republic was. So the idea that the Rebellion's military would be mainly former Confederacy forces makes a lot of sense.

Final Words : While I found Jul Tambor to be interesting, if his death at the end of the issue is just another fake out I'm going to be annoyed. The Star Wars comics do this far too often, showing us a death, and then taking it back, so much so that I find myself automatically assuming that the final page of every comic is just a lie.

Score : 7.5/10
