Finding Inspiration for Tabletop Roleplaying Adventures

Tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) have been a staple of the gaming community for decades. They offer players a unique and immersive experience that allows them to explore their creativity and imagination in new and exciting ways. But, for many gamers, the greatest challenge of TTRPGs is coming up with new and exciting adventures. In this article, we will explore some tips and techniques for finding inspiration for your TTRPG adventures.

Define Your Goals

Before you begin your search for inspiration, it is important to define what you hope to achieve with your TTRPG. Are you looking to create a thrilling, action-packed adventure filled with battles and conflict? Or are you interested in a more character-driven story that explores themes like love, friendship, and betrayal? Understanding your goals and what you want to achieve with your TTRPG will help you focus your search for inspiration and ensure that you create an adventure that is both engaging and meaningful.

Look to Literature

Literature is a rich source of inspiration for TTRPGs. From epic fantasy novels to gripping thrillers, there is a wealth of material to draw from. When looking for inspiration, consider books that have captured your imagination and that you think would make for a great TTRPG adventure. Additionally, think about what elements of the story would translate well to a TTRPG format, such as memorable characters, exciting plot twists, and vivid worlds.

Study History and Mythology

History and mythology are two other great sources of inspiration for TTRPGs. These sources offer a wealth of stories and legends that are full of adventure, excitement, and magic. When studying history and mythology, think about how you can incorporate the stories and legends into your TTRPG adventure. You could create a historical adventure set in a specific time period, or you could create a mythical adventure that is set in a fantastical world filled with mythical creatures and magic.

Explore Your Own Interests and Passions

Your own interests and passions can also be a great source of inspiration for TTRPGs. Think about what you love and what you are passionate about, and consider how you could turn those interests into a TTRPG adventure. For example, if you are an avid traveler, you could create a TTRPG adventure that takes place in different countries around the world. If you are a fan of a particular movie or TV show, you could create an adventure that is inspired by that story.

Experiment with Different Genres

Finally, consider experimenting with different genres when looking for inspiration for your TTRPG adventures. TTRPGs can be set in a variety of different genres, from science fiction to horror, and everything in between. When experimenting with different genres, think about what elements of each genre would work well in a TTRPG format, such as action scenes, suspenseful moments, and character development. One of my personal best adventures was dropping a haunted house horror adventure into Star Wars, it was unexpected and had a stronger horror effect than it would have had in a traditional horror game such as Call of Cthulhu.

Conclusion

Finding inspiration for TTRPG adventures can be a challenge, but it is also one of the most rewarding parts of the TTRPG experience. Whether you look to literature, history and mythology, your own interests and passions, or experiment with different genres, there is no shortage of material to draw from. So, let your imagination run wild and have fun creating exciting and engaging TTRPG adventures that will captivate your players and keep them coming back for more.
