Big Ba Da Boom

This was a one off adventure of Call of Cthulhu that I ran, the player were all playing pre-generated characters, and the adventure was "The Statue of the Sorcerer" an older Games Workshop adventure. I can`t remember which characters everybody played, L was an Itinerant Preacher (with a bible loaded full of dynamite), R was a Librarian and K was a Private Detective and we were joined by L`s girlfriend for the first session.

Well, things started badly, and got worse. The adventure was extremely linear, and the players once they got off track had no way of solving the adventure, also large segments of information seemed to be missing from the adventure so the game came to a halt while I searched for non-existent sections.

The adventure came to a climax with the players confronting the villain of the adventure, who just happened to be invulnerable unless the players had discovered his secret and used magic to disrupt it. The players had failed to discover anything AT ALL about the villain except he was immortal and invulnerable to damage.

So using their acquired knowledge they decided to sneak into the villains country house and attack him, which although I couldn`t see a way of them succeeding, I couldn`t see any other way the adventure could go.

So they crept into his country estate, and managed to reach his underground temple without being detected, armed only with their wits, a few weapons and some homemade molotov cocktails they charged into the room, discovering the villain and his female sidekick inside, so combat began.

K fired his pistol at the sidekick, missing completely.

C threw a molotov cocktail at the female sidekick, turning her into a human torch and killing her outright.

L who was wielding a length of wood, battered the villain across the head who wasn`t affected at all.

R shot at the villain totally ineffectually.

The villain punched at K, knocking him unconscious instantly.

At around this moment, the party started to realise that attacking an invulnerable villain, without any idea of his weaknesses, or even without a plan, was perhaps not the worlds best idea.

It was also around this moment that L conceived his master plan.

C made a guess that the villain could only be effected by living beings, so attempted to punch the villain, to no effect.

L put into action his masterplan, throwing his bible full of dynamite into the fire still burning around the sidekicks corpse.

Everybody ran at this point, leaving K`s unconscious body behind, however they didn`t manage to outrun the explosion which killed L and C, but R was far enough away to survive and see the villain stride unharmed from the explosion.

R fled the burning ruins of the villains country house, and escaped back to the city proud in the knowledge that he was the only survivor of the adventure. However the sanity loss for seeing his friends killed before his eyes, and letting the villains plan come to fruition, reduced his sanity below zero and left him institutionised. So the only real survivor of the adventure was L`s girlfriend who wasn`t there for half the adventure, thereby proving that she was the smartest in the group.
