Capsule: Very few escort carriers were built in the small FNA shipyards orbiting Fanjin, indeed those that were ‘built' there were actually conversions from civilian ships rather than entirely new vessels. This was partially because the Fanjin shipyards have been grossly overtaxed simply trying to keep the FNA merchant fleet operating, and partially because the Fanjin shipyards aren't really capable of producing high-quality military ships. As a result only 5 Fanjin-built escort carriers have seen service: the FNASS Vindex, the roughly similar FNASS Nairana, the smaller FNASS Activity, the larger FNASS Campania, and the ex-passenger liner FNASS Pretoria Castle. Fanjin- built escort carriers tend to be slightly more solidly built than their Jandin-built counterparts, simply because the Jandin-built ships were mass-produced, while the Fanjin-built ships were carefully converted one at a time from merchant vessels. The Pretoria Castle can be considered fairly typical of these escort carriers, although it has seen service primarily in a training role. On average these carriers can carry from 15-18 starfighters, in an approximate ratio of 2 torpedo bombers to 1 fighter. In this configuration these escort carriers have proven quite effective as Q- Boat hunters, and on occasion they have coordinated with hunter-killer groups once their convoys have reached safety.
