The son of a small-time boxer, Matt Murdock was taught by his father that
fighting was not the answer to life’s problems. A poorly educated but noble
man, Battlin’ Jack Murdock encouraged his son to achieve great things with his
mind, rather than his fists. Idolizing his father, Matt took the advice to
heart. As a result, his fellow students mockingly dubbed the introverted
bookworm “Daredevil.” Humiliated, Matt began training without his father’s
knowledge so he could stand up to the bullies in school.
As raised by his father, Matt was selflessly noble. This was never more apparent
than when he pushed an elderly man out of the path of a runaway truck. Matt’s
kindness was cruelly repaid by fate when radioactive waste from the vehicle’s
payload splashed onto his eyes, blinding him. Devastated at first by his
apparent handicap, Matt slowly came to realize that the accident had radically
augmented his ability to perceive the world around him. His vision was gone, but
the radioactivity had heightened his other senses to a superhuman degree.
Unable to adjust to his overdeveloped senses, the terrified Matt eventually came
under the tutelage of the blind martial-arts master Stick. A stern, unrelenting
taskmaster, Stick educated Matt in both the spiritual and physical aspects of
the martial arts, refusing to let him think of himself as a helpless victim.
Matt emerged as an Olympic-class gymnast and formidable hand-to-hand combatant.
As a student at Columbia University Law School, Matt met and fell in love with
Elektra Natchios, the daughter of a Greek diplomat. Their happiness was
shattered when Elektra’s father died during a hostage crisis. Elektra withdrew
emotionally from both Matt and the world at large. Fleeing to the Far East, she
buried her feelings and honed her fighting skills to razor-sharp perfection.
The loss of Elektra wasn’t the only pain Matt would suffer during his college
years. Past his prime as a fighter, Jack Murdock had fallen in with a shady
crowd and was ultimately murdered for refusing to throw a fight. Not satisfied
with the police investigation, Matt hid his identity beneath a mask and took it
upon himself to track down the criminals who had set up and murdered his father.
Taking the name Daredevil, he brought those responsible to justice.
Finding satisfaction and release in his extracurricular activities, Matt adopted
the costumed identity on a permanent basis. During the day, he worked within the
judicial system, aided by college roommate and fellow attorney Foggy Nelson. But
at night, freed from the constraints of the courtroom, Matt pursued those
criminals who had slipped through the system’s cracks. For a time, he knew
happiness as Daredevil, living out his fantasies as a swashbuckling crimefighter.
But Daredevil’s efforts to undermine New York’s crime infrastructure
attracted the attention of the Kingpin, who made it his personal mission to
destroy the hero. Hiring Elektra as his chief assassin, the Kingpin set in
motion a chain of events that led to her death at the hands of Bullseye.
Although she later returned to life, Elektra’s murder nearly crippled Matt
emotionally—touching off a vicious cycle of violence, loss and pain.

end of the tunnel? That's not heaven, that's the C train!”
Roleplaying the Nanjin Adept
He dwells in a world of eternal
night, but the blackness is filled with sounds and scents, tastes and textures
most men cannot perceive. Although attorney Matt Murdock is blind, his other
four senses function with superhuman sharpness. He stalks the streets at night,
a relentless avenger of justice: Daredevil, the Man Without Fear!
