Capsule: The Courageous and her sister ship, the Glorious, began their careers as ill-conceived ‘large light cruisers,' and were planned to be the largest in a new fleet of small, nimble ships that would operate in the Dolduar asteroid belt. In practice it was soon found that these ships were large enough to be easy targets, yet didn't possess the weaponry to defend themselves, or adequate shielding, since they were geared more towards speed and maneuverability than anything else. In the one occasion when they saw action in this configuration, against more conventional light cruisers, they suffered much more damage then they inflicted. The decision was made to convert the vessels into starfighter carriers, in a similar fashion as the Eagle and the Furious before them. These conversions benefitted from the experiences of the earlier conversions, which led to more space available for the hangars, although in other respects the Courageous and the Glorious were not much improved over their predecessors, despite many minor refinements. The obvious benefit of having a much greater starfighter capacity than earlier carriers had a great influence on the later fleet carriers built by the FNA. The Glorious and the Courageous were lost within 9 months of each other, the latter to the combined fire of two HPL battlecruisers.
