Capsule: The Illustrious-class of fighter carriers was produced only shortly after the Ark Royal, and took the concept of an armored starfighter carrier slightly further. Unfortunately the FNA designers didn't wait to get any combat feedback from the Ark Royal designs, and the armor placement on the Illustrious-class ships was actually slightly less efficient than that of the Ark Royal, which resulted in a lower starfighter capacity. The last ship of the Illustrious-class, the Indomitable, reverted to a less-armored model which allowed the vessel to carry more starfighters than her sister ships. The strength of these ships has proved to be a great asset, despite the limitations imposed by the structural reinforcements, and all of the ships in the class have survived numerous direct hits, including suicide attacks by HPL starfighters. It should be noted that even the Indomitable, with her lighter armor, has survived conventional and suicide attacks by enemy starfighters, as well as a direct torpedo hit.
