First Order stormtrooper armor | Imperium of Man Rhino APC | Commander Beryl Chiffonage (Human Rebel Officer) | BD-1 (BD-Unit Explorer Droid) |
What is it ? : Late at night Marlaa Jinara, the owner of the scrapyard, and the giant droid JG-1 are awoken by a noise, the search for what is causing it, and JG-1 accidentally destroys one of Marlaa's sculptures. They are approached by a strange shape and Marlaa panics and screams.
The next morning the Young Jedi and Nash are delivering some spare parts to Marlaa's scrapyard and find her in a state of panic, she hasn't slept for days saying things in the scrapyard are being moved around and she thinks it's a Gloomling, legendary beings on Tenoo which haunt people's homes until they're forced to leave.
The Young Jedi get permission from Master Zanna to stay the night, and sleepover at the scrapyard to help find out what's happening. They share scary stories of Gloomlings, and Nubs becomes frightened. They are disturbed by a strange chittering noise and go to explore, splitting into two groups. One spots the reflection from a broken droids head and thinks it's something watching them, while the other is disturbed by a trunk closing when no one is near it. And they retreat, scaring one another as they meet up once again, but notice Nubs is missing.
They discover a hole in the ground, and using their lightsabers to illuminate the way they explore, and soon encounter Nub's lightsaber and then Nubs himself, but before he can tell them anything a strange figure with a hood and a glowing eye causes them to panic and flee.
Climbing back out of the hole, they find Marlaa preparing to leave, the chaos has caused sculptures to be knocked down, and she is resigned to giving up the scrapyard to the Gloomlings, as this is the thing they are known to do, cause disruption until you leave.
The Jedi prepare a trap, and when the figure reappears, they use their lightsabers to herd it into the trap, but when they examine the captured figure they discover it is a broken droid covered with a dust sheet.
The strange noises come from it's malfunctioning vocabulator, so Marlaa fixes it and it's photoreceptor which is dangling out of its socket. The droid explains that it used to work in a shop, but was left for junk when the owner left the planet. The droid, PT-3, came to the scrapyard looking for parts to repair himself, and Marlaa invites him to stay.
The next day they find that Marlaa is rested and happier, and Nubs investigates the trunk that mysteriously closed the previous night but finds nothing, but after he leaves we see it mysteriously close once again. . . .
High Points : It's a fun little episode, with them spending a night in a scary place sharing ghost stories and scaring one another. We've got the return of Marlaa and JG-1, and while the visit to the Starlight Beacon last episode felt like we were heading in a new direction, we're firmly back on Tenoo and regular stories, which is a good thing as I'd prefer them to keep using their extended cast they've introduced.
Low Points : The scares they receive are very weak, the reflection of some droid eyes, a droid covered with a dust sheet, a broken vocabulator. Also what happened to Nubs to cause him to drop his lightsaber, it seems as if something more serious happened to him, but we never find out.
So what do you really think ? : It's not the strongest of episodes, but it's mildly amusing and I reckon that kids would like it. I'm really finding it difficult to say much about it, as it's well done, but unexciting.
Final Words : The message of this one I think it, there's nothing out in the dark which isn't there in the day. Or perhaps, just that there's nothing to be scared of.
