The Acolyte: Season 1: Episode 5: Night
What is it ? : Osha awakens from where she was thrown at the end of the last issue and instantly spots the body of one of the Jedi lay dead, she then spots the clash of lightsabers nearby.
The mysterious master is fighting the Jedi, and kills one of them before Osha fires her stun gun at him, but he shrugs off the effects and turns on her throwing his lightsaber at her, but Master Sol deflects the blast.
Sol orders Yord to take her back to safety at the ship, and the pair leave catching up with Bazil. Mae exits Kelnacca's hut but is spotted by Jecki and the two fight as Jecki attempts to arrest Mae for the murders of the Masters, with Mae eventually ending up handcuffed.
As they head back to the ship, Yord and Osha discuss the masters abilities, and Yord comments that he can get inside your head, and Osha remembers that was something her mother used to do.
Jecki realises that Mae had stolen Kelnacca's lightsaber and stows it on her belt, and the pair head outside where they are ambushed by the master, Jecki's lightsaber crackles and shuts off on striking the masters armor, but she pulls Kelnacca's lightsaber and fights on with that until her lightsaber switches back on. The master slashes at and destroys Kelnacca's lightsaber, taunting Mae that Jecki is a loyal apprentice, unlike her.
Osha and Yord arrive back at the part of the forest with the large insects, which Osha remembers are attracted to light, so shuts off her torch and instructs Yord to switch off his lightsaber, which he does.
Back at the fight, Jecki manages to knock the masters helmet off, but is stabbed three times before dropping dead to the ground, allowing Sol to recognise the master as Qimir.
Sol in angered at the death of Jecki, and asks Qimir what he is. He tells Sol he doesn't have a label, but the Jedi would probably call him a Sith, and that the Jedi make the rules, as all he wants is to train an Apprentice, and Acolyte. Qimir grabs Mae as a hostage, and threatens her, causing Sol to drop his lightsaber.
Osha senses the death of Jecki and hears Mae calling for her, so uses her torch to attract the insects and sprints back towards the fight.
As they arrive back, Yord grabs the dropped mask, and when he attacks Qimir, he uses it to parry causing his lightsaber to crackle and shut down. Yord recognises Qimir and is surprised, allowing Qimir to quickly break his neck killing him.
Osha leaps at the master and attaches the head of her droid Pip to him, which starts a light beacon, and the insects swarm down and attack Qimir, lifting him off to consume him.
Sol promises to tell Osha the truth, but before he can say any more Mae grabs Osha's stun gun and stuns him. Osha attempts to arrest Mae, but Mae tells her that the Jedi turned her against her own sister, and uses force push to hurl Osha and knock her out, commenting she could never deflect an attack. She then uses a discarded lightsaber to cut her hair into the same style as Osha.
Qimir breaks free of the insects, dropping to the forest floor after killing them, Mae pretends to be Osha taking her clothes, and she and Sol return to the ship Bazil retrieves Pip's head and sniffs it.
Finally, Qimir retrieves his cloak and helmet, and finds the unconscious Osha, wrapping her in his cloak he tends to her. . .
High Points : That is one incredible battle, I love the twists and turns, the usage (the first onscreen) of Cortosis, shutting down lightsabers. But I especially love how quickly the fight adapts to this, with Jecki pulling Kelnacca's lightsaber when hers becomes useless, and then Yord using Qimir's helmet against him to shut down his lightsaber. These are moments where I was excited and loved these characters, only for them to die, which made this only more shocking.
The use of the insects from last episode was also fantastic, turning the environment on Qimir was a brilliant way of ending the fight.
Low Points : The swapping of the twins at this point, feels like the Disney Parent Trap movie, with Mae perfectly styling her hair into Osha's style without a mirror and only a lightsaber to do the cutting. This really shouldn't work, and perhaps it won't as the episode did make a point of showing Osha's tattoo at the end so we know they're not quite identical.
So what do you really think ? : So, is Qimir a Sith, therefore contradicting Ki-Adi Mundi's comment in The Phantom Menace that the Sith haven't been seen in a thousand years? Well, he tells Sol that the Jedi might identify him as a Sith, but that just means that the Jedi slap the label of Sith on anyone who uses the Force but isn't a Jedi. He also tells Sol that he kills any Jedi who see him, which might mean that Ki-Adi Mundi will never hear of this story about a Sith anyway.
But we shall see.
Final Words : I really enjoyed this one, the action was amazing, and the combatants acted intelligently. The amount of Jedi deaths as well was shocking. I'd expected all the Jedi "Red Shirts" who'd turned up last episode and not even been given names to die, but Yord and Jecki really saddened me, as I had really grown quite fond of them and wanted to see more.
I'm guessing we get a flashback episode soon, as Qimir tells the truth to Osha to try to recruit her as his new Acolyte. Which feels a little generic, but I can't really think why. It could lead to an interesting exploration of ideas, with Osha being angered at the half truths that the Jedi have always told, while Mae redeems herself having seen how self destructive the ways of the Dark Side are.
But again, we shall see, because at this point the series could prove remarkable, or prove to be an absolute disappointment.
Score : 9/10

Okay. We got the action we've been expecting. Like I said about last week's episode, we would have thought that last week, this week, and probably next week would be the last episodes of this show.
Now for the big question - is the guy Sith? He definitely serves the dark side. But Sith? In my opinion - no. He seems too disturbed. In all the portrayal of the Sith in movies, cartoons, and novels, while the Sith are malevolent, nearly none of them were ever insane or otherwise unhinged. The one exception was Maul, but that was after spending over a decade cut in half and having a makeshift prosthetic lower body attached. When Palpatine got him, raised him, and trained him, Maul wasn't insane. Qimir is definitely unhinged and mentally disturbed. Just like Ben Solo/Kylo Ren was emotionally disturbed until after his mother's death.

There seems to be some excellent exploration of problems with the Jedi that we've known about since Phantom Menace. That they just straight up kidnap children from their parents, and that they tend to label anything not Jedi as Sith. If this is what the show is exploring, then I'm all for it, it's just been ignored how flawed the Jedi really are for too long. My worries are that this will just be ignored for a far more conventional story.
Qimir does make a solid point about it's the Jedi that make the rules, seemingly including the Rules on who gets called what. He's just a happy go lucky guy who wants to teach others his evil ways. and those darn Jedi have to go around labelling him a Sith and hunting him down. Ignoring the fact that the Jedi wouldn't even know he existed if he hadn't sent Mae to go murdering Jedi Masters.
