Knights of the Old Republic 15: Days of Fear, Part 3

What is it ? : Gryph is ordering Slyssk to break down the Restaurant when he smells something, Slyssk reveals he has already made breakfast, so Gryph decides to delay leaving Serroco as Zayne warned to sell what's been made.
Meanwhile Carth Onasi is leaving aboard his ship when he realises someone else is aboard, and pull his blaster until he realises it's Zayne, who he only recognises from their encounter at the restaurant earlier. Zayne tells him he's a Jedi and has had a vision of the Mandalorians bombarding the cities from orbit, so needs to warn Admiral Karath. Carth is dubious about Zayne's claims, until Zayne demonstrates using the Force to show he is a Jedi.
He communicates back to Gryph to check whether he's leaving yet, but Gryph sees a massive queue waiting to buy lunch, so delays once again.
Carth's ship arrives at the flagship of the Republic Armada in orbit, and presents Zayne to Karath who recognises him this time, and congratulates Carth on capturing the murderer of the Padawans, and someone who he thinks is obviously a Mandalorian spy. Weaving a fiction where Zayne was a sleeper agent among the Jedi, and now he's trying to cause dissent in the Republic forces as well as change their defences to protect against this made up story about an attack on the cities.
Zayne begs for them to contact Squint as a witness to the good he has done, freeing the Jedi from the Mandalorians on Flashpoint. But Karath mocks him for not even knowing the name of the Jedi he wants them to contact, only knowing his nickname. Although Carth believes him enough to go and try to contact Squint.
On the planets surface lunch has now finished and Gryph orders Slyssk to break camp and prepare to leave, but Slyssk admits that the ship doesn't have enough fuel aboard to even make orbit, never mind make a jump to hyperspace. Alarms begin to blare as the Mandalorian fleet is detected arriving in space near to the planet.
Aboard the flagship they detect the fleet and that it has launched a full barrage of missiles, and the fleet prepares countermeasures, but the missiles are not targeting them and slip by to hit the surface.
Around the Galaxy Jedi are shown feeling the deaths of many across the surface of Serocco.
Aboard the flagship they detect that 27 cities have been hit, the human settlements have been damaged, but the Stereb ones where the staging camps are have been wiped clean, and only 8 ships managed to get away in time, with Gryph's ship not among them.
Karath begins ordering a responce, and orders Zayne to be locked up, he's going to hand him over to the Jedi, hoping that what they do to him will be worse than whatever he can think of.
Later in his cell, Carth comes to visit Zayne, telling him that he was unable to contact Squint. But he was able to contact the surface and use the old storm alarms to get people to retreat into the catacombs beneath the Stereb cities, managing to contact 17 of them. He tells Zayne to hang on it there . . . .

High Points : Despite everything he's gone through, Zayne remains an optimistic Jedi. He doesn't consider that Karath might not believe him, he just thinks of saving lives and assumes everybody else will be on board with that. In an age of cynical heroes, Zayne is refreshing and appealing.
And while it might at first appears to be a bad point, Gryph delaying and delaying his escape from Serocco because of profit is perfectly in character. He stated in a previous issue, that people value their short term safety over their long term prosperity, so it's completely in character for him to do this. And he really did intend to leave, just he was willing to risk more and more of his safety for his prosperity.

Low Points : However, the comic snatches this away. Instead of Gryph's life being in danger because of his greed, we then find out that it made no difference at all, as the ship is out of fuel. So he could have decided to leave that morning as soon as Zayne warned him and still not managed it. The only redeeming feature of this twist is that Gryph now has no lesson to learn from this, and will be exactly the same the next time this happens.

Also while I can understand Karath wanting Zayne for the murders he is accused of, Zayne's a wanted criminal after all. It does seem a little extreme the fantasy he goes to when creating the fiction that Zayne is a sleeper agent, and that he's been working for the Mandalorians all along. Karath is an Admiral, supposedly an intelligent man who has risen to his position through hard work, so him just making stuff up makes him seem like a common conspiracy theorist.

So what do you really think ? : The story is moving along well, and Carth Onasi is proving a solid part of the story rather than just a cameo, so I'm objecting to his presence less and less. And I'm enjoying us getting to see some of the Mandalorian wars, and the atrocities they perform which cause Revan and Malak to disobey the Jedi Council to fight against them Mandalorian's. As this has always been one of the stronger points of Revan's story, that while going to war and hating your enemy are not the Jedi way, defending the weak and fighting evil definitely is, so Revan's disobedience has always been a matter of judgement. And it's really nice to see the evil he was willing to go against the Jedi Council for, is indeed worth defeating.

Final Words : So Karath has informed the Jedi where Zayne is, but the Mandalorian and Republic Fleets are about to clash, which makes me wonder if the Jedi will turn up in the middle of the chaos of battle, or whether we're going to wait even longer before getting back to Zayne's storyline.

Score : 8.5/10

Admiral Karath reminds me of Tarkin in one respect - both believe that to have peace, you must first have order. And both are willing to use any and all means to gain and enforce order to gain peace.

I'm having difficulty seeing Karath as a person so far, mainly because I'm aware that he ends up as Malak's right hand man. He's willing to use any and all means, but I don't see any reason behind it other than grasping for power, much like Malak missed the point of Revan's conquests.

Don't know about the grab for power angle.

Also, Zayne wanted to warn everyone about the vision. About the only one who believed him somewhat was Carth, who was able to warn the native. Thus, while there was a high loss of life, the casualty number could have been a whole lot higher. Like extinction-level.
