Knights of the Old Republic 50: Demon, Part 4

What is it ? : Rohlan flies Zayne into the Osadia Academy on his Jetpack, and Zayne smashes through a skylight disrupting the fight between Jarael and Chantique, leading to Chantique getting her hands on Exar Kun's lightsaber. Zayne ignites his and the two fight, with Chantique wondering why Zayne has come back for Jarael as he knows she was part of the Crucible, but he reveals he knows that the name Jarael was given to her by slaves and means Protector, whereas Chantique is actually the destroyer.
He reveals that he knows Chantiques father is Antos Wyrick, telling her that he has been masquerading as Demagol and is here.
Meanwhile, Rohlan confronts Demagol, angry about the Zeltrons treatment of children, as while Mandalorians will take children and train them, they never target them or enslave them, and angry about Demagol wearing his armor. As they fight, Demagol gets angry and with a gesture throws Rohlan across the room.
Zayne and Jarael catch up with the situation with who she believed was Rohlan actually being Demagol, and Zayne realises that Jarael never felt anything from Exar Kuns lightsaber. Even he with his limited use of the Force could sense it from outside the building, but even when she was holding it, she felt nothing.
Chantique recovers, pulling Zayne's lightsaber into her hand using the force, and boasting how she can sense the power in Kun's lightsaber.
But she gets knocked off her feet by Demagol who demands of her to know where the students are? She tells him they are in the schoolyard, but when he goes outside there is no one there. She repeats, they're "in" the schoolyard, revealing she killed them all and buried them.
Demagol says at least with Jarael he can rebuild, but Zayne reveals to Demagol how mistaken he has been, Jarael has no Force powers, the powers she demonstrated were all manifested around Demagol, and as Rohlan found out, Demagol can use the Force as can the Daughter he abandoned, Chantique.
Chantique attacks Demagol, but he pulls the lightsabers into his hands and activates one of them holding it against his chest, but it is Exar Kun's double bladed lightsaber and the blades spear through him and Chantique killing them both as he exclaims he had a 50/50 chance, which Zayne comments, "Not around me."
Days later on Coruscant, they Jarael and Zayne realise it has been one year since they met on Taris in the junkyard, and Rohlan reveals that while he was looking into the Osadia school he interviewed two Arkanian Offshoots, and he introduces Jarael to her real parents, before disappearing.
At Gryph's restaurant, Gryph comments that Rohlan is back on his run, and explains that the restaurant is doing extremely well, with all the deals on the planet being done there, and he's got everu table wired, so he knows all the secrets. He tells Zayne he could use his help, but Zayne wants to leave, especially now he has taken ownership of Rohlans Goethar Special speeder bike. But Gryph asks him to wait tables, just to help out, but Zayne discovers this is just a set up as Jarael is waiting for him for a date. Jarael asks him about the Jedi no emotional or physical connection rule, but Zayne points out he would have made a very bad Jedi, and the two kiss as he wonders if by physical connection, she is going to beat him up again.
And Gryph gets the final word, sarcastically calling Zayne, "Mastermind".

High Points : A strong ending, with most story lines tied up, and everyone getting a happy ending. Jarael and Zayne are together, Gryph isn't just affluent, but he also gets to listen in and take advantage of all the secrets on Coruscant, and Slyssk gets to be the chef in the most popular Restaurant on the planet.
And we get a great final use of Zayne's power, making Demagols last gamble go wrong, killing himself and Chantique.

Low Points : But it doesn't really end the comic series, the Crucible is still out there, only Chantique is gone, and she wasn't really the leader. Chantique and Demagol being the Force Sensitive's is a bit annoying, especially as they have to explain how Demagol instinctively hid his powers from all the Jedi he was around in a very convenient way.
Exar Kun's lightsaber being some magically corrupting influence, instead of just being a laser sword, gives power to the weapons that has only ever been hinted at in The Force Awakens (and then never followed up).
And it's all a bit anti-climactic, Zayne's bad luck causes Demagol to accidentally kill himself and Chantique, THE END.

So what do you really think ? : There still feels like a lot of story needs to be told, we're left with the Mandalorian wars ongoing, we've seen Malak go from a nice, friendly and brave Jedi Knight called Alek, to being somewhat darker, but I feel as if there's more to see within the context of the Mandalorian wars, before the later fall to the dark side with him and Revan becoming Darth's.
And certain characters, just stopped being in the series without having any kind of ending to their story, the Moomo Brothers especially, who were such a major part of the story, just went away. While I suppose this is rather like life, people come in and leave your story, without them having any real end, the just drift away, it feels unsatisfactory for a comic series.

Final Words : So that's it, Knights of the Old Republic the comic series finished.
It feels as if they forced the end, rather than it coming to a planned end. And while I'm aware that Knights of the Old Republic: War exists (and I will be covering it sometime real soon), it is a separate story which involves Zayne as it's protagonist, and we get cameo's by Gryph and Jarael, but it's really not a story about this group, and Zayne's ability to form groups was core to this tale.

Did I like it, Yes very much so, there were loads of great features, and while it's not as compact a story as The Saga of Nomi Sunrider (for example), the continuing and meandering story managed to explore these characters extremely well.
Finally, I have to admit I always kind of expected some kind of return of Camper which never happened, but his story was told, and that was rather nice for his departure to be a feature of the tale.

Score : 9/10

The issue with Demagol and Chantique - call it karma or poetic justice, but they got what they deserved.

And what Gryph said at the end - that wasn't aimed at Zayne. He was complimenting himself, since he "masterminded" Zayne and Jarael meeting each other in his restaurant and their impromptu date.

This series may be done, but there's that 5 part sequel dealing with the Mandalorian Knights.

I definitely thought it was a barb at Zayne, since Gryph had felt aggrieved that Zayne had been masterminding the Rogue Moon Project behind his back. He felt that Zayne had outsmarted him, so was glad to see Zayne behaving characteristically idiotic as he spoke to Jarael.

As I say above, I'll be covering Kotor: War, real soon, I've had a quick read through, and while it's based around Zayne, I really feel the storylines of the Kotor comic aren't involved, and a main point of this series was the relationship between Zayne, Gryph and Jarael, and Gryph and Jarael really only get cameos in War. So I definitely consider the Kotor series finished, even if we haven't seen the last of Zayne.
