Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 13: The Andraven Circuit

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are on the snowy world of Andraven, their friend Gumar is about to take a test where he attempts the tasks that the first of his species to arrive on the planet performed. He has prepared a datapad with all the information he thinks he needs, but his father advises that he has learned it all.
He is allowed outsiders to help, so invites the Young Jedi, and shows them the sled that will be drawn by Wellagrin, which is ornately carved with the story of his ancestors.
They set off, the first test being to get some heat stones, Gumar takes them to a place but no heat stones are visible, but Gumar remembers that plants often have them among their roots and spots a plant on a melted piece of ground and gets everyone a heat stone.
The second test is to find some snowfigs, and they find them high in the branches of a tree, and have to stand on each others shoulders to reach before they can retrieve one.
The third and final test is to make a flute out of Kao reeds, they find a lake where the reeds are known to grow, but a large Zaba Wolf is nearby. Gumar checks his datapad but it has been broken, and the Young Jedi reassure him that he has prepared for this and knows everything he has to know, but he spots the carvings on his sled which show his ancestors playing a kao reed flute to calm the zaba wolves. So while the Young Jedi distract the wolf, he goes to get the reeds and make a flute.
Nubs ends up being chased by the wolf, and hiding up a tree, but the wolf leaps up and breaks the branch he is on, only for Kai and Lys to keep the branch levitating just out of the wolfs reach. As their efforts begin to falter, Gumar plays his flute and the wolf becomes friendly.
Realising that nightfall is close and the test is nearly over, he rides the wolf back to the starting line, and not only has completed the test, but has befriended a zaba wolf which haven't been seen since the time of their ancestors, leading to much celebration. . .

High Points : While the test is pretty straightfowards, I do like the twists they put into it to make it more difficult, the heat stones being buried and having to recognise that the plants are growing around them on the soil thawed by their presence. The snowfig being high up, and them having to find a way of getting to it, especially when Gumar won't allow the Jedi to use their powers, as his ancestors didn't have the force.

Low Points : But the last test is made more complex by the wolf, and completing the test calms the wolf, it just does fit. The test itself is the easy part, surviving the wolf is the difficult part.

So what do you really think ? : Apart from that it's a simple little episode, the plot moves on well, there's some danger and risk to keep you interested, and I've always liked the look of snow, so I find the visual appeal of this episode to be top notch.

Final Words : This episode has so much going for it, but there's just a touch of blandness to it which means there's just nothing I can point at and say was great, everything is fine, but it's not outstanding in any way.

Score : 8/10
