Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 15: A Sticky Situation

What is it ? : Kai is chasing a small rodent, a Snap Rat through the Jedi Temple on Tenoo, and as he chases into the yard, with the help of Lys and Nubs he levitates it into a cage. Everyone comments on how brave he is for chasing down these Rodents, when Lys suggests taking it to the visiting SF-R3 the safari droid.
Taking the caged rodent into SF-R3's ship, he also praises Kai's bravery for capturing the rodent, and Kai shrugs off the praise, but notices in other cages within the ship there are some Crystal web spider's, which he is afraid of as he is afraid of spiders. SF-R3 tells him that they've also got a Spider King to relocate, as he is making a nest, and will live within it forever, so needs to be relocated quickly. Kai sees the Spider King, a massive spider, and backs off from it into the control button which opens all the cages, releasing all the spiders.
The spiders race out of the ship into the temple, so they need to recapture them, especially the Spider King before it makes a new nest. SF-R3 suggests using some biscuits to lure the spiders back, and they find the smaller spiders and lure them back to the ship with the crackers.
However inside the temple they find many webs, and SF-R3 mentions that the Spider King's webs are especially sticky, something supported when they find some other students stuck to the webs.
They find the Spider King, but Nubs, SF-R3 and Lys get caught in it's web, so it's left up to Kai, who is still afraid of the spider to deal with it. But he begins luring the Spider King back to towards the ship with a trail of biscuits. In the foyer he encounters Master Zanna who is also afraid of the spider, but has freed the others with her lightsaber. Kai has overcome much of his fear, so continues to lead the spider back onto the ship, and they lock it back in it's cage.
Master Zanna explains that she is also scared of spiders, and complements Kai for overcoming his own fear, explaining that Jedi are not controlled by their fears, but then she sees the Snap Rat and explains she is also scared of rodents, so leads the group quickly from the ship, where Kai begins telling his tale to a group of other Younglings.

High Points : While I'm not afraid of spiders, I do find them creepy, so the idea of Kai being frightened by them easily connected with me, so I did enjoy this story of him learning that they wouldn't do him. Otherwise the story goes quickly, it's quick, fun and enjoyable.

Low Points : I did find that the idea of these giant spiders not being dangerous to be kind of odd, the fact the spiders wove webs which captured human sized prey, kind of made me think that the spiders would be more than happy to capture the Young Jedi and eat them. To use something as predatory as a spider, and then try to make it cute and harmless really seemed contradictory.

So what do you really think ? : As said above, it's fast moving, exciting and fun, even though I was constantly having to struggle against the idea that this giant spider should be trying to cocoon and digest the younglings within the jedi temple.

Final Words : Again the Jedi show their lackadaisical attitude to child care, a giant spider takes over the Jedi Temple, and captures most of the students in it's webs, presumably as it's dinner, and there's no adult Jedi to be seen until Master Zanna turns up late in the story. Honestly is she and her padawan supposed to be the primary carers for a couple of dozen preteen kids? It's no wonder they keep getting in trouble, the Jedi certainly seem to believe in survival of the fittest.

Score : 8/10
