Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 18: Lys Lost Lightsaber

What is it ? : At Black Spire Outpost, Jedi Master Carver Drow leads his padawan Celesta Kami and the Young Jedi in a public display of Lightsaber forms. A crowd watches, with a particular young girl, Sadie Bolter, trying to get a view, but a bully, Pak Relda, blocks her view.
Sadie climbs onto some containers, and uses a painted stick as her lightsaber as she practices the moves along with the Jedi, but Pak sees her and mocks her for only having a stick.
Sadie decides she wants a lightsaber, and as the display ends, and the Young Jedi and Celesta go to get some food she follows, and when they get distracted by some animals and Lys drops her lightsaber, she takes the opportunity to take it.
Kai notices that Lys doesn't have her lightsaber, and they look around spotting Sadie holding it as she leaves the scene. Celesta and Lys give chase, sending Kai and Nubs to inform Master Drow, but Sadie hides in a sewer and they lose her.
When she emerges she ignites the lightsaber, but Pak sees her, and threatens her for the saber, Sadie holds it defensively, but Pak swipes it from her hand, mocking her as she leaves.
Celesta and Lys find Sadie, and she admits she took the saber, explaining about being bullied and that she thought having a lightsaber would make her brave, Lys explains to her that having a lightsaber doesn't make you brave, bravery comes from within.
Sadie leads them to Pak's ship where she is preparing to leave, Lys and Celesta confront her, but she sets some droids on them, and it looks as if she will escape in her ship before the two can deal with the droids especially since Lys doesn't have her saber. So Sadie leaps into combat, knocking the saber from Pak's hand, and telling her she's not afraid of her anymore. Pak declares that she never really wanted the lightsaber, and she leaves in her ship.
The three retrieve the lightsaber and head back to the square where Master Drow, Kai and Nubs are. Kai is confused they are being friendly with the thief, but Lys explains she has apologised, and Sadie tells them of their recent adventure . . .

High Points : Again this episode uses some of the high camera angles which impressed me so much last episode, although not as often, but we get some good views of the town from above, showing us how Lys and Celesta manage to miss Sadie when they are giving chase.

Low Points : Lys makes a huge thing of losing her lightsaber, of the shame she'll get, of how she's supposed to be mindful of her lightsaber. Which makes some sense, but didn't Kai lose a lightsaber early in the series, which Yoda replaced with the one he used when he was a youngling? There didn't seem to be massive shame poured on Kai for losing his, why should Lys be treated differently?

So what do you really think ? : The number of episodes about animals being taken from where they belong occurred to me once again when watching this episode, where the Young Jedi are only too happy to encounter a bunch of animals in pens in the town. Hardly a natural environment! I don't ask the show not be preachy, as it's a kids show, and that's kind of a kids show thing (we all remember He-Man's messages at the end of episodes of Masters of the Universe), but I do ask for consistency.

Final Words : Another absolutely fine episode, it moves along well, there's a solid beginning, middle and end to the story, everything is done in a very competent fashion. But it feels like we've seen the story of bullied kid does bad thing, is caught and becomes good kid after words of wisdom, so many times already. There's nothing really new here.

Score : 8/10
