"ROLL A 20"

This was during our first session of AD&D 2nd Edition in the Dark Sun game world, the party consisted of L playing a Dwarf Gladiator, K playing a Half Elf Ranger, R playing a human thief, Me playing a Thri Kreen Gladiator and (most importantly in this story) C playing a Half Giant Gladiator

The game set up was that we had all been captured and sold as slaves to the local Gladiatorial arena. So we had to escape, well the GM had planned that we should team up with a tribe of Elves that had also been captured and that the two groups would escape together.

Well the adventure started, and in our first battle in the arena (against the elves), we showed our usual skill and diplomacy in dealing with NPC`s, and started taunting them. Enraged they attacked, and were slaughtered to the last man (although we had a few scary moments when most of the party became caught in a hold person spell).

After this was over we were returned to our cell, and we ended up mugging the jailer for his keys so we could escape. A fast chase and running battle was held through the arena and its holding areas, and finally we came within view of the exit door.

Which was a massive doorway and had a huge, thick stone door rolling down from the ceiling, about to block our exit. The GamesMaster called for Dexterity rolls from everyone so they could rush under the door as it thundered down into place. Everyone Succeeded (with some even showing off using Acrobatics to flip over the final guards heads as they jumped clear). Well, everyone except C, that is. C`s Half Giant didn`t have a very good Dex, and even if he had it wouldn`t have mattered, because C had fumbled.

The rest of the scene went something like this..

GM: (consults rulebooks), "Okay, errr, roll a 20 ......", (continues to look up tables).

C: (rolls dice, which comes up a 20), "Okay done it!", (looks triumphantly at GM).

GM: (finally finds relevant column on table), "..... and you`re dead.", (looks up from book to find entire group looking at him).

C: "What?!?"

GM: "You leap for the door, but tumble to the ground coming short of the exit. Looking up you see the door rushing towards your head, it slams to the floor squashing your head like a melon."

Rest of Group: What?!?
