Biography
Breaking the Lawson
Nico Deemis was a Gran male, who, by the Imperial Era, was one of the biggest crime lords on the Mid Rim planet of Janix, holding the title of Head Boss. Brander Lawson, a former bounty hunter and captain in Janix's law enforcement agency, the Tactical Defense Force, always kept an eye on Deemis due to the criminal's prominence.
At one point, Lawson attempted to bust a poisonous creature smuggling operation in a cantina he believed to be owned by Deemis, but the establishment's Dowutin bartender had been forewarned by Deemis' mole within the Tactical Defense Force and poisoned the police captain's drink of Corellian whiskey with Wasber venom. As the venom's deleterious effects took hold, Lawson called for backup in the form of his police droid partner 2B0T. The ensuing fight, in which numerous deadly species escaped, allowed all the operation's clients to get away and the accounting list to be destroyed, thereby preventing the operation from being tied back to Deemis.
Lawson's boss, Chief Klyce, admonished him for this fact and assigned him a team, comprising of the alien Fraxmoor and humans Jam Jam and Hendrix. Lawson recognized the latter from the cantina by the officer's red cybernetic arm, for Hendrix was actually one of Deemis' moles. Lawson showed his new unit wanted posters of Janix's foremost crime lords: a Pau'an, an Aleena named Looti Vario, and Deemis himself. Lawson then informed his team that someone who wanted revenge for the poisoning of her brother at Deemis' hands was in a safe house only the five of them knew the location of, and that it was to be protected on rotation, starting with Jam Jam.
In actuality, Lawson hoped to prove Hendrix was Deemis' mole and was vindicated when Jam Jam was attacked by the corrupt officer, only to be ambushed and subdued by 2B0T. The Tactical Defense Droid informed Lawson that Hendrix had admitted to having been working for Deemis, but at that moment, a sniper shot and killed the mole, to Lawson's dismay.
Rich Gran's world
One evening, Deemis attended a dinner at a high-end restaurant, sitting at a table full of politicians and business leaders. A server came over and whispered in his ear, prompting him to excuse himself, uncharacteristically leaving his plate, glass, and powerful guests. Lawson, who had continued to pursue Deemis, witnessed this on a stakeout and followed the Gran back to his headquarters. Via a recon droid, Lawson and his partner 2B0T watched as Deemis met with a droid, who informed him about an opportunity to steal twenty million Imperial Credits. Deemis replied that it would be hard to get anyone able to pull it off, especially given the Imperial providence, and that he could get the droid's backers the weapons they wanted, but that he would be calling the shots. The droid then told Deemis where to attend a meeting two hours hence and left. Leaving his recon droid trained on Deemis, Lawson then pursued the droid.
Dinner with an Aleena
At one point, a bank owned by Deemis was raided by the Shadow Collective, stealing his bank droid while destroying several guard droids. Learning of the attack the morning after, Deemis flew into a tantrum, smashing several objects in his office before demanding answers from his enforcers, composed of two Trandoshans and an Aqualish. One of the Trandoshans suggested Looti Vario was responsible. Deemis immediately ordered a meeting in neutral territory so he could question his rival.
Taking his three bodyguards, Deemis met Vario at a warehouse in the Janix city port, where the two crime bosses exchanged tense pleasantries as they sat down for dinner. Vario then brought up the bank attack and asked if Deemis had any suspects. The Gran threw the question back at Vario, who stated that it could've been anyone, given the multitude of enemies Deemis had accumulated. Deemis argued none of them had the courage to pull the heist off until Vario subtly suggested that it was mostly likely Maul, their one-time master they both betrayed. He initially denied the suggestion, believing Maul to have disappeared, and stated that if the rogue Sith were targeting him, Vario would also be a target too and suggested his rival was trying to misdirect him. Vario argued he had nothing to gain from stealing from Deemis. But before the Aleena could describe how he would've attacked Deemis, their serving droid lifted the tray cover to reveal the barely functioning head of Deemis' bank droid. Taking this as proof that Vario was responsible, Deemis and his enforcers drew their blasters; with one of his Trandoshan enforcers giving Deemis his blaster, while Vario's three droid guards did likewise; both sides were unaware that the Shadow Collective had planted the head. Vario protested they had a truce, but Deemis briefly glanced towards the droid head and refused to hear him as he opened fire.
Death
As a firefight erupted between the two syndicates, Deemis quickly grabbed the table and used it as a makeshift shield. As both sides continued to exchange fire, Deemis spotted Vario trying to sneak away and went after him. Managing to sneak up on the Aleena, Deemis shot Vario's armored suit from behind, causing him to roll over a railing. But when the Gran moved in for a closer look, he found Vario's suit empty, shortly before the Aleena called out to him. As he turned around, Vario quickly shot Deemis four times in the chest, killing him.
As Vario was leaving the scene, he was pursued by the Shadow Collective, resulting in a chaotic speeder chase, before he was taken into custody by the Tactical Defense Force. Captain Lawson later identified Vario as Deemis' killer. Threatened with a life sentence, Vario claimed self-defense and he was set up by his former boss of the Shadow Collective.
Later Lawson visited his old friend Rheena Sul at her casino, The Mark and Claim, where she told Lawson of the Shadow Collective was formed by Maul on Mandalore. Suspecting Maul was on Janix, Sul commented it made since with Deemis and Vario missing.
After evading the Empire, the Shadow Collective took refuge in Deemis' office at his old headquarters, despite Rook Kast opposing it, Vario claimed his office is where the Empire will look but since Deemis is dead his office will work. Vario then received a encoded transmission from Dryden Vos.
Personality and traits
Like all Gran, Nico Deemis was a tan-colored humanoid with a pronounced snout, a trio of eye stalks, small antenna-like nubs on the top of his head, and thick, bulky hands. He was physically big, and Brander Lawson believed him to have an enormous appetite for food, drink, money, and power. When he left a table at a high-end restaurant to meet a messenger, thereby abandoning the politicians and business leaders around it and the plate and glass on it, Lawson considered the action most unlike him and indicative that a valuable criminal opportunity as big as the Gran himself was being presented to him. Deemis did, however, excuse himself before leaving, raising a glass when he stood up. Deemis could speak Galactic Basic.
Equipment
Deemis wielded a gold-plated blaster pistol and wore a black coat with gold accents and a fur-lined collar.
