Description: Looti Vario was an Aleena crime lord, and member of the Shadow Collective, who was active on the Mid Rim Territories world of Janix during the early Imperial Era.
Biography
A scheming scoundrel, Vario made use of a mechanical suit of armor to bolster his otherwise diminutive height. Vario was an associate of the Shadow Collective during the Clone Wars, but along with his rival Deemis he left the collective, withdrawing his ships and weapons for Maul, leaving him to die during the Siege of Mandalore when the war ended. After the war, the syndicate members disbanded the collective and assumed Maul died, Vario began his own syndicate starting an alliance with the Pyke Syndicate to help smuggle their spice into the local system.
After the Clone Wars, Captain Brander Lawson of Janix's Tactical Defense Force botched a smuggling bust, the police force's Chief Klyce assigned him a team, to whom he showed wanted posters of Janix's foremost crime lords, being a Pau'an, a Gran named Nico Deemis, and Vario himself. Sometime later, when Lawson was hunted by an assassin and officer from his own department, Vario became an unlikely ally, though the Aleena had his own hidden agenda.
After a bank tower owned by his rival was robbed, one of Deemis' lieutenants set a meeting with Vario in a warehouse in a port on neutral territory. Arriving with three of his his droids, Vario greeted Deemis, with his rival insulting that he "at least filled the suit". Sitting down on one side of the tabel, Vario expressed pity over the bank robbery and asked if Deemis knew who did it which Deemis assumed it was Vario despite his many enemies. When Deemis explains why he suspected Vario, was due to the fact no one had the nerve to pull something like the robbery off, but Vario counted that one person did, referring to their former boss Maul, which Deemis dismissed, believing he died on Mandalore and wonder if Maul is alive why would he be after him, which says due to his betrayal, which Deemis also thinks Maul would be after Vario due to his betrayal. Vario replied it is possible, which Deemis accuses Vario of misdirecting him, which Vario tells Deemis he wouldn't start a war because he has too much to risk. Deemis got angry because Vario possibly wanted to make him look weak and take over his territory, which Vario dismissed. But before the crime lords can continue, one of the protocol droids opens a pot, which had the head of Deemis' bank droid, much to Varios confusion. Seeing his bank droid, Deemis sees it as confirmation that Vario was the one and one of his Trandoshan gave him his blaster, which Vario's droids drew theirs. But Vario attempts to stop Deemis, remind him of their truce but no arrival, and Deemis starts a fight on neutral territory, Vario ducks behind one of his droids.
As the fight continued, Vario had his droids spread out, cornering Deemis' forces; two Trandoshans and an Aqualish. Seeing an opening, Vario attempting to escape, which Deemis follows not wanting him to get away. Really Vario tricked Deemis, by having him shot his mechanical suit in the back so he can get out and kill him, shooting him four times in the chest before getting back into his suit and with his last droid, who informs him that Deemis' enforcers are killed. The two get into their landspeeder and get away. Unknown to Vario, he was being watched by Spybot, Maul's droid, who has Rook Kast send in their forces to finish Vario.
While escaping, Vario sees a large bank transport, and his pilot droid manages to avoid being crushed but as Vario uses one of his blaster rifles to fire back at a Mandalorian super commando, the back door opens and Vario sees one of the Zabrak's uses a chaingun to open fire. Vario manages to avoid being shot, but his droid is destroyed, forcing him to take control of his speeder. Throwing his droid out, Vario notices his engines being destroyed by the chaingun and prepares to jump out after flipping his own speeder. Once on the bank transport, Vario uses his flamethrower, which causes the bank transport to crash, injuring the crew inside. One of the Zabraks comes out with a WESTAR-35 blaster pistol, and open fires on Vario, forcing him to escape his suit. Seeing the Zabrak, whom he recognized as Scorn, one of Maul's minions, confirming Vario's theory that Maul is alive and set both him and Deemis up to kill each other.
Before Scorn could kill Vario, a blaster bolt shot from a Tactical Defense Force cruiser, driven by Two-Boots and Lawson, whom Vario was pleased to see. As Lawson orders the assassins to surrender, Icarus recovers and uses his chaingun to open fire, which allows the crew to escape back to their hideout and Vario was taken into police custody by Lawson.
At the Janix Civil Defense HQ, Lawson learns that Vario killed Deemis and threatens to put him away if he doesn't provide an explanation. Vario justifies he killed Deemis is self-defense and he was set up before stopping. As Lawson pressed further, Vario asked about the headquarters security, which made Lawson even curious of what the Aleena is afraid of, which Vario only response was the Shadow Collective. Taken to a prison cell, Vario notices a Twi'lek girl, Devon Izara, staring at him, which he attempts to intimidate her. Seeing his cell, was too small, Two-Boots replies that it is adequate to his needs before closing the doors.
Later that night, Maul broke into the police headquarters with Icarus, Scorn, and Spybot, determine for Vario to pay for his betrayal. Once the Zabraks came to his cell, Maul points his lightsaber at his head, but Vario offers to aid him in his revenge against the Pykes, specify getting to Marg Krim. Maul deactivated his lightsaber and orders his Zabraks minions to take Vario alive, which Icarus brings him out of his cell and Scorn helps escorts him out, Icarus kicking Vario so he can move faster.
While escaping, Vario climbs down a ladder while Maul's crew are being pinned down by blaster fire from Lawson and the other officers. The crew manage to lose the officers, with Icarus using his chaingun to destroy the controls and cause the doors to close, while carrying Vario to a small landspeeder. As Icarus drives, Vario is in the back with a Mandalorian commando and Scorn, but their landspeeder is damaged when a hooded Mosyk individual uses the Force to flip and crash the smaller speeder, which the bank transport collides with it. Vario and the others manage to climb out but the Tactical Defense Force arrived. Maul manage to distract both the Mosyk and police force, so the group can get away back to their hideout.
Arriving at the hideout, Vario is thrown into a tanker tube cell by Scorn, despite his protest. Later Kast and two commandos escort Vario to a room, where he is pushed down a flight of stairs, where Maul gets to business, telling Vario to provide him the time and location of the spice shipments to disrupt their network and Krim will suspect him and want to meet. Vario is first reluctant to cross Krim, because he is dangerous and powerful but Maul uses the Force to drop a repulsorcart of credit bricks, forcing Vario to help get revenge on Krim.
Vario's information proved to be reliable and was taken back to his tanker tube. Spybot took control of the Pyke cruiser's guidance system and redirected the cruiser to a nearby moon near Janix and jammed the ship's comms to prevent them from sending a distress signal. Once the cruiser landed, Spybot lowered the cargo lift and allowed Maul to get in and kill the entire crew, while Kast and her commandos stole the payment from the lifts. Maul came back to Vario, where he attempted to pursue Maul to release him but Maul reminded him once Krim is dead then he will be free, which Vario groaned before Scorn intimidated him in return.
After Izara broke out of her cell, Vario was surprised of how she broke out, but Kast and her commandos directed her to a room where Maul was. Later Kast visits Vario for the next Pyke shipment which Vario provides which resulted in four Pyke enforcers being sent in another Pyke cruiser to a warehouse, interrogation two smugglers of Vario's syndicate. The cruiser was tracked by Officer Reb and Two-Boots who engaged the criminals after the Pykes kill one smuggler, detaining the rest for questioning. Although Kast and her forces arrive and kill the remaining criminals, injuring Reb and almost destroying Two-Boots.
As Kast returns to Vario's cell, where Vario complains of not getting any food, requesting a medium rare nerf filet but she reprimanded him for his constant talking, and then instructed Vario to follow her. In a room, Kast tells Vario that the Pykes are trying to contact him, which Vario grumbled about his explanation to the Pykes before Spybot threatens him from behind, which Kast directed to him what to tell the Pykes what exactly what she told him.
Contacting the Pykes, thanks to Spybot, Vario greets Krim, but Krim chastises him for being foolish or brave to test his patience. Vario apologizes for his delayed response and expresses his grave regret for the Janix situation but explains to Krim that the attacks on his shipment weren't him or his syndicate but were caused by a group of rogue lieutenants of his rival Nico Deemis. Krim doesn't buy it at first but Vario claims that the remnants of Deemis' syndicate wanted to cause trouble for both of them but he assured Krim that the group, like their former boss, had taken care of and no longer pose a threat to their syndicates. Since it doesn't look good for business, Vario offers to make amends by personally delivering the lost payments to Krim plus the value of the destroyed Janix cargo. Vario continues to say he is willing to do anything to remain a trusted associate of the Pykes and making sure his syndicate is the most secured and reliable operation in the local system. Despite Vario' professed loyalty, Krim warns if this is one of his schemes, he will send an army of Pykes to capture and torture him to death then feed his remains to his nexu horde. Despite being scared, Vario agrees before ending the transmission.
Taking a Lau cargo ship piloted by his droids to Oba Diah, Vario identified himself and Imperator Krim is expecting him, which a Pyke gives him permission to land at the Pyke Palace. Once the ship lands, Vario exit the entry ramp and his two droids bring out the carts of credits. Kalt orders two enforcers to count the money with two Pykes pulling out a portable scanner. Vario gets nervous and warns the Pyke, he didn't have a choice, which confused the captain at first but Vario clarifies that he is here. Ordering the two Pykes to search the entire ship, one found another life-form, which a hooded Zabrak suddenly appears and kills the two Pyke enforcers. Vario says he tired to warn them but takes cover, as "Maul" slaughters more Pykes and his two droids. Before getting to Kalt, Vario sees his chance and pulls his blaster out, stunings his captor several times, telling Kalt to tell Krim he brought him Maul.
Taken into the palace, Krim revealed he heard rumors of Maul's return on Janix and demands for Vario to explain himself. Vario explains that Maul took him captive and was going to kill him if he didn't cooperate but he took care of him before he got to Krim, telling Krim he is welcomed. Krim seeing Maul's lightsaber, orders the hooded Zabrak to be brought closer but upon taking off the hood, Krim realized it was Icarus. The doors open, revealing Maul who used the Force to activate his lightsaber, killing Krim, as Vario took cover with Icarus. After the remaining guards surrendered, Maul warns the pyke about betryaing him again and appoints the Captain of the Guard Kalt as the new puppet leader of the Pykes.
