Biology
A naturally bred gornt would grow to a meter or more long and was supported by four limbs, two small front legs and two large hind legs. Their head had a single horn and their mouths were surrounded by tendrils which they used to eat almost anything. Naturally herbivore, their efficient digestive system could break down most substances into prime nutrients. The meat lasted a long time without spoiling and was nutritious and pleasant tasting. Gornts lived for an average of 6 years, and mated 3 times. Gornt pups, called ayas, were born alive in litters of 2 to 4 and raised by their mothers for the first year.
Behavior
Wild gornts travelled in packs of 10 to 30, with half of the pack being young gornts that were known as gorntlings. They were simple creatures who were mostly concerned with eating, sleeping, and breeding.
History
When the animal was discovered on Hethar by the Galactic Republic, their meat was found to be sweet, juicy, and highly nutritious. Gornt meat became a standard within Imperial soldiers' rations. Raising meat gornt became a prime cash enterprise; however, after the Empire annexed the animal's native planet, the gornt meat industry was mismanaged by the loss of genetic variation, and the quality of the meat produced was on the decline.
They were referenced in the title of A Google of Gornts.
