What is it ? : The Mon Cal Rangers are escorting Refugees through the Devils Crevasse which is a dangerous area of the oceans of Dac, when they come under attack from the Sea Leviathan and AT-AT Swimmer. Darth Azard and the Givin Sith Scientist Vul Isen discuss their roles within the Sith.
Meanwhile Treis Sinde gets a message from Roan Fel telling him to abandon the Mon Calamari as he is needed back on Bastion to train new Imperial Knights. Sinde wants to keep aiding the Mon Cal, but Fel tells him they are not allies of the Empire and Sinde's duty is to do what his Emperor tells him. This is overheard by Tanquar, one of the Mon Calamari Rangers, as the news arrives about the attack by the Sith Leviathan. Sinde advises that it is too dangerous to attack, but the Rangers decide it is more important to try to save the Refugees. Sinde is swayed by their words, and advises them to attack the AT-AT Swimmer instead as it controls the Leviathan so can turn the creature away from the Refugees without sacrificing themselves against the Leviathan itself.
As the attack commences, the Refugees are forced into the Devils Crevasse itself which is filled with Devilsquids, dangerous creatures which will slaughter the refugees. But as the Squid rise up out of the Crevasse, Sinde is riding one, using the Force to control these creatures in an attack on the Leviathan itself.
The AT-AT Swimmer launches it's Shark Fighters to defend itself, but the Rangers target the hatch while it is open and unshielded, destroying the Swimmer, whose head lands some distance away. The Rangers rescue Sinde from the battle with the Leviathan as it is dragged down into the Crevasse by the Devilsquid, and inside the Swimmer's head, Vul Isen takes Azards lightsaber and cuts the injured Sith Lord free of the wreckage. Azard is surprised at being rescued, but Isen points out they are both Sith and serve Krayt.
After the battle, Sinde contacts Fel and warns him that the Sith are reactivating ancient Sith Leviathans which could be dangerous, and Fel asks why he has not left Dac yet? Which Sinde says is difficult unless Fel sends a transport, which he cannot spare at the moment, so Sinde will remain and aid the Mon Calamari, which Fel agrees to reluctantly. . . .
High Points : A nicely handled battle, but most of the interesting material in the story is the revealed interactions, where Sinde is showing a more Jedi like attitude in wanting to help people and save lives, rather than the Imperial Knight's attitude of just following orders. And we see the attitude within the Sith, that the force users look down upon other members of the Sith Order under Krayt, but Azard gains an appreciation for Isen not only because of his usefulness, but that he saved his life.
I also really liked that the Devil Squids look like the heads of Quarren, the other intelligent species which evolved on Dac, a nice touch showing that the species all come from the same biosphere and are related.
Low Points : They made a massive thing last issue of the pods on the Leviathan's back, which created an electrical type effect which drained the life from creatures nearby, but then it doesn't use it at all this issue. Why doesn't it just drain the life from the Devilsquids turning them into lifeless husks just as it did to the Mon Calamari last issue.
This means the Leviathan, a supposedly massively dangerous creature is defeated all too easily, making me wonder why anyone is really bothered about it when it's so easily taken down.
So what do you really think ? : An enjoyable little diversion from the main plot, but I can't help but feel it would have been better if we'd seen the start of the effects of Darth Krayt being taken out by Wyyrlok. A change in policy, and some loss of the almost religious faith that the One Sith had in their leader.
Final Words : As I've said before, Legacy often tells it's best stories when it's not dealing with it's main characters, and this has been pretty interesting, although I really wanted to see more. The effects that ordering the slaughter and enslavement of an entire species has across the galaxy, whether it does cause others to fall in line, or whether they enter open rebellion against the people who would do such a thing. Or even just quietly start preparing to resist if it turns out they are next. It's nice to see the details of what is happening on Dac, but the galaxy has gone through this before with the destruction of Alderaan, so it would be interesting to see the details of this on a galaxy wide basis.
