Star Wars: Legacy: 36: Renegade

What is it ? : Around the world of Ralltir, the Krayt Empire has placed a fleet protecting this major financial centre. When suddenly the Galactic Alliance Fleet arrives and attacks, but the defending fleet has the edge in size, so cannot understand why Gar Stazi has ordered this attack. When the Galactic Alliance calls in it's Fel Empire allies.
Stazi complains that Admiral Edouard Fenel is late, but Fenel responds that he was just making sure Stazi didn't run away, citing the example of the Battle of Caamas which he remembers, because he was there. Stazi tells him he also remembers that battle, where Fenel ordered the destruction of disabled vessels killing crew who couldn't fight back.
Not outnumbered, the Krayt Empire Admiral, Peto Kelsan, receives a communication from Fenel, who tells him that both sides will pause firing temporarily if Kelsan channels Fenel through to all the vessels in his fleet, to which Kelsan agrees.
Fenel calls on the vessels to surrender and join their "true" Emperor, Roan Fel, or be destroyed, telling them that if their commanders refuse they should rise up and seize their vessels.
One of the Commanders refuses, and Fenel orders all Imperial ships to open fire on that vessel to make an example of it, and demands that Kelsan's fleet does likewise, but Kelsan refuses instead ordering his fleet scuttled and crews to take to lifepods. But Fenel orders his people to destroy any lifepods being launched.
Gar Stazi thinks this in an abomination and orders his fleet between the Fel vessels and the lifepods, sending a communication to Roan Fel himself, to discover whether this is truly the way that the Fel Empire operates or just a rogue admiral.
As the crews abandon their ships, Kelsan communicates with Stazi, thanking him for sparing his crews, and deciding to go down with his vessel as it self destructs.
The single vessel that refused to surender has not scuttled itself, and Fenel orders it's destruction, but Stazi orders his fleet to defend it, Fenel tells Stazi he has made a gesture but that time has now passed, but Stazi wants to see if they are true partners in this alliance, or whether the Fel Empire is just going to treat them as vassals.
Roan Fel himself responds to Stazi's message, and Stazi tells him that Fenel overplayed his hand, or they might have captured the fleet. But the battle is not a total loss as at least the Sith have lost a fleet.
Fel complains that he is Emperor, and Stazi is not his equal, but Stazi responds that he is the highest ranking officer in the Galactic Alliance, and therefore their regent to which Fel agrees and apologises, asking what will be done with the remaining Sith Vessel. Stazi tells him the crew will be dropped off on the planet and the vessel itself sent to Fel.
Afterwards he wonders that although they remain allies, who will be more dangerous to them in the future, their enemies or allies. . . .

High Points : An interesting little diversion as we see the state of the galaxy as the new Fel Empire / Galactic Allliance . . . . errr . . . . Alliance begins to work together. This uncomfortable alliance doesn't get off to a great start, the Fel Empire looks on Gar Stazi as mere vassals, rather than partners against the Sith. And the past history between the two means there is a lot of bad blood, and mistrust.

Low Points : But the tactics used by the Fel Empire seem to work a little too well, as only a single Sith vessel refuses the orders, and only when Fenel orders them to fire upon one of their own do they take the option to abandon their ships and scuttle them. While we see some of the commanders of the vessel refusing the orders, their crews rise up against them and seize the vessels. This make it look as if the way is going to go easy, as the majority of the Sith Fleet will refuse to fight, so any future battles will be easy.

So what do you really think ? : A nice little side story, with some interesting tactics going on, as Gar Stazi and Edouard Fenel push the alliance to it's very limits, seeing if either side will open fire on one another. It does all seem to be a little convenient that the Krayt Empire side does surrender so easily, but this story isn't really about them, but rather Fel and Stazi seeing how much they can get away with.

Final Words : While we're seeing this new alliance strike against the Sith, we're not really seeing any tactics going on. It seems like they should be either striking towards Coruscant or Korriban, or helping gain new allies by helping the Mon Calamari to bring them and their shipyards into this new alliance. But instead we get them striking at a fleet around a financial world, without us really knowing any value of this. And it doesn't even seem like they succeed in seizing the world, instead just concentrating on destroying it's defences, to force the Sith to channel resources to protect this world from future attacks. The comic series seems completely directionless at the moment, with only Darth Wyyrlok's goals clear.

I can definitely see Han, Leia, Jagged, and Jaina not approving of how the Empire turned out after Jagged seemingly became its leader. It's become too much like Palpatine's Empire, which makes me wonder about the future of the galaxy. Will history repeat itself again?
