Star Wars: Legacy: 47: The Fate of Dac

What is it ? : On Dac, Darth Azard and Vul Isen receive orders from Darth Wyyrlok that Krayt no longer wants resources tied up on Dac, so they are to execute The Final Protocol, the release of viral spores to destroy all life on the planet. Azard asks what about the Quarren, their allies, and Wyyrlok tells him to not block their escape from the dying world, but not to aid them either.
A Galactic Alliance squadron scouting out the planet spots the oceans being filled with millions of dead bodies, and angered they attack Krayt Empire fighters defending the world, but escape to warn the alliance.
On Corsuscant Regent Veed confronts Darth Wyyrlok, telling him he has Quarren representatives in his office, but Wyyrlok force chokes him into submission, telling him that his function is to take the blame.
Gar Stasi on hearing the news calls on the Fel Empire to aid his fleet in evacuating the surviving Mon Calamari, but without orders from Roan Fel they refuse, warning Stasi that it's an obvious trap to lure his fleet in, and he tells them he's been escaping Imperial traps since Cammas. They continue to warn him that even the loss of Dac isn't as important as the destruction of the Sith, but he tells them some battles must be fought.
In preparation for the rescue attempt, saboteurs take out the planetary defences, and without their support the Imperial fleet retreats allowing the Galactic Alliance fleet to begin landing ships and evacuating the population including some of the wildlife of the planet.
The Imperial Fleet returns, but under the command of Darth Stryfe they ignore the Galactic Alliance fleet to target the transports, as Stryfe commands that Krayt has told them to destroy the Mon Calamari, so the Galactic Alliance is secondary. Where the Admirals think that destroying the Galactic Alliance fleet would be tactically more important.
But this turns out to be foolish, as they target some transports only to discover they are filled with Ion Bombs which disable part of the Imperial Fleet. The Imperial Admirals tell Stryfe that this tactic demonstrates why Stasi and the Alliance fleet should be targeted, but Stryfe tells them to continue targeting the refugees, telling them that the Alliance will attempt to defend the transports and the fleet can grind them into dust.
As the transports are attacked, Stasi indeed inserts his vessel to protect them, but the tide of the battle suddenly turns as the Fel Empire fleet arrives, and finally Stryfe follows his Admirals advice to not lose their vessels and lives, and the fleet retreats, allowing the combined Fel Empire and Galactic Alliance fleet to manage to evacuate 20% of the planets population.
Stasi thanks the Fel Empire Admiral for not waiting for Roan Fel's orders, which the Admiral denies, he did indeed get orders, although had positioned his fleet close to Dac so they could help within moments of getting the orders he was sure that his Emperor would give.
On Coruscant, Stryfe reports to Wyyrlok of the events around Dac, which Wyyrlok considers a success as it will send a message to the galaxy. He then receives a message from Darth Nihl on Korriban who tells him Darth Krayt is missing. . . .

High Points : A really solid issue, and the battle around Dac plays out really well, with Stasi planning his mission well, and the commands from the Sith hampering the Imperial Fleet more than helping it, demonstrating yet again why Sith and Jedi should never be put in charge of military operations.
It was also nice to see the Fel Empire Admiral, Jaeger, wanting to help rescue people from the devastation of Dac, showing that the Fel Empire isn't just the Galactic or Krayt Empires, and is actually more humane. He positions his fleet ready to help, even though he refuses to act until he receives orders. Not exactly a hero, but at least not a monster who just ignores the plight of the people.

Low Points : While it's nice to see the Galactic Alliance and Fel Empire working in a humanitarian way, I find the number of people they rescue to stretch credibility. According to Wookiepedia, Dac had a population of 27 Billion before the Genocide, and they claim to rescue 20% of the population, which would be over a billion people, so even if they could pack a million people onto a Star Destroyer sized vessel, they'd still need a thousand of those vessels to evacuate that many people. I really think the number should have been lower, which would have made the tragedy even worse.

So what do you really think ? : I've been swaying between giving this issue an even higher score, as it stands out from the rest of the issues, covering such a massive and shocking event. But again it suffers from the same problem recent issues have been suffering from, which is it's rushed. That rush makes it dramatic and shocking, going from the orders to start the slaughter of the population, to the discovery of the first dead bodies, through to the evacuation and battle, to the completion of the evacuation, all of which takes place within a week. But it feels like it would have been better paced had the orders been placed last issue, rather than just rushing through it all.

Final Words : So we're now going into the final three part storyline to complete the Legacy series of comics, and I can't see how the end is going to come. All I can imagine is that Cade's crusade to defeat the Sith will coincide with Krayts revenge against Wyyrlok, leading to the fall of the Sith. But I'm not convinced that it's all going to be wrapped up given the existence of the War series and the sequel Legacy series.

Score : 9/10

First off, I think this issue proved to be a shatterpoint for Dac history and Mon Calamari/Quarren relations. During the evacuation, more Quarren refugees were asking to board the GA escape vessels. And Gar Stazi answered that if you want more people to be evacuated, ask your Sith allies for help! I think after this war, the galaxy will no longer trust the Quarren as they used to. Even if by some miracle Dac is made habitable, I don't think the Mon Calamari will welcome back the Quarren.

As for the Fel Empire, I said it before, and I'll say it again - there's following orders and there's doing what's right. Treis Sinde did what he felt was right. And evacuating Dac, even without orders to do so, would have been right. I'm pretty certain Han, Leia, Jagged, and Jaina aren't happy with how their descendants are managing the Fel Empire.

My main character I played was a Quarren, so the entire species being evil really doesn't feel right to me, having a chip on their shoulder for being dragged into everything by the Mon Cal's I think would have been a far more interesting way of handling them. Having them be deceived by the Sith into betraying the Mon Cal's, as Dac is punished for the decisions made by the Mon Cal government to support the Galactic Alliance would have led to the same concept without writing off an entire species as evil.
