Star Wars: Legacy: 49: Extremes Part Two

What is it ? : Gar Stasi and the Galactic Alliance fleet arrives at Utapau, a world where they have set down to repair and resupply on many occasions while they have been on the run, the deep caves providing a hiding place for their vessels. But as Gar Stasi speaks to the leader of Utapau they are observed by a mouse droid which reports back to a spy.
Across the galaxy on Bastion they detect a Sith Vessel arriving which gets through their defences as it knows the access codes, the Imperial Knights are concerned that one of their number might have been captured and made to hand over the codes, but it turns out to be Azlyn Rae. She reports that Princess Marisiah has been captured by the Sith, which distresses Antares Draco who blames her for abandoning her duty to protect the Princess. Hearing the news Roan Fel gives them three hours to come up with a plan to rescue, or kill Marisiah from where she has been taken on Korriban, to stop her handing over not only all of the codes for the Fel Empire, but also the location of the Jedi Hidden Temple.
On Nal Hutta, Cade, Deliah, Jariah and Wolf have arrived as summoned to meet Vedo Anjiliac Atirue, and discover that Naxy Screeger is now working for him. They insult Naxy, but he tells them only Cade has been summoned and activates a trap separating Cade from his friends and unleashing some battle droids against him. He fights his way through and meets Queen Jool and Vedo. Vedo tells him it was a test as Jool had made extraordinary claims about Cades capabilities, and tells Cade he wants to hire him to kill Vul Isen for killing his nephew and for desecrating the moon of Da Soocha.
Cade tells him he would do that for free, but Vedo wants to pay him because this is personal and by paying Cade, Cade becomes the weapon of his revenge. Once Cade agrees, Vedo tells him that he has discovered that Gar Stasi has gone to ground on Utapau, so the Sith will send Vul Isen to exterminate the Galactic Alliance fleet and the people that support them, and to ensure this he has leaked the knowledge of the location to the Sith. So Cade agrees, but doesn't inform his crew that the planet's population is at risk.
Back on Bastion, Antares studies the holocron of his master, Eshkar Niin, coming up with a plan to rescue Marisiah.
Meanwhile Marisiah is being tortured by a Sith, Darth Havok, who she quickly realises is actually Eshkar Niin who she believed Antares had killed when he fell to the Sith. She tries to kill herself to avoid handing over the information she knows, but Havok denies her that chance, telling her that soon she will wish he had allowed her to die.
Antares arrives on Korriban disguised as a Sith, with Ganner Krieg and Shado Vao in chains as his prisoners, he demands to be given a torture chamber, only to be told that it is occupied by Darth Havok and his prisoner the princess.
Vul Isen is experimenting with a new virus to wipe out the population of Utapau, and Darth Azard suggests that they allow it to kill Gar Stasi, but Isen has placed an assassin close to Stasi to stop him escaping before he becomes infected.
The Mynock sets down on Utapau with Deliah and Jariah pretending to be weapon traders making a deal with Gar Stasi, while Cade and Wolf slip away to find Vul Isen, they locate the spy who sold Stasi's location to the Hutts, but he is killed by an assassin, they find out from the assassin that other assassins have been sent after Gar Stasi, so they contact Jariah to let him know to keep an eye out while he is around Stasi.
Meanwhile on Korriban, Darth Nihl is still on the trail of Darth Talon where he intends to discover her secrets. . . .

High Points : I mentioned last review that I thought that the Hutts would come down on the Sith for the desecration of Da Soocha, and sure enough that happens, but I really liked the way it's handled her. The Hutt's don't really want to go to war, but they're more than happy to let their money do it for them, considering anyone they pay to be their weapons, so hiring Cade to eliminate Vul Isen. It makes me wonder what other efforts they're making, putting their money to work against the Sith who defiled one of their holy places.

Low Points : The story is jumping around a lot once again, really feeling rushed. And the introduction of Eshkar Niin / Darth Havok is done pretty terribly. Last issue when we saw him for the first time, he was hooded to hide his identity, making me wonder at the time if he was going to be someone we knew. But it turns out it's not someone we know, but someone Marisiah knows. This could have been handled so much better if we'd seen his face, then seen Antares looking at his holocron to give us some chance to see it for ourselves before the characters see it. And if he'd been mentioned at some time in the past as Antares master who'd fallen to the Sith to give us some foreshadowing. But the way it's done, he's introduced as Antares master on one page, and then identified as the Sith torturer on the very next page. It just comes out of nowhere, and makes it look as if the writers had no idea that it was going to happen either.
I also must comment that Naxy Screeger gets a lot of jobs, when we were first introduced he was a minor character in a bar where Cade was collecting a bounty. Then he came back as Cade's inside man working for Black Sun, which was nice. But now only a few issues later he's working for the Hutts, which makes some sense, but it feels like he's just thrown in to be a recognisable face.
And by this point, Darth isn't a title with much more respect that Mr. We've got so many Darth's wandering around, which aren't just the leaders of the Sith as we'd seen before, with many believing it to be a portmanteau of Dark Lord of the Sith. But it's lost all value by now, with ever minor Sith guard taking the title.

So what do you really think ? : There's a lot going on, but I really can't see how we're going to get any kind of satisfying ending to Legacy without it continuing into the spin off titles.
And while it's good having Cade have a target that we can get behind him trying to take out, I have to question his motivations. The slaughter on Dac is horrendous, and Vul Isen deserves punishment, but why particularly has Cade chosen him to target? He declared himself to be the worst nightmare of the Sith when Darth Maladi tortured Deliah, so why isn't he hunting for her instead?

Final Words : So only one issue to go, Darth Nihl is still searching for Talon who we know to be with Krayt, and Cade is hunting for Vul Isen who is about to exterminate another world, seems kind of right that a Star Wars story should be coming to it's climax trying to stop another world killer, even if this time it's a virus and not a Death Star.
