What is it ? : An Imperial Shuttle on a mission commanded by the Imperial Knight Yalta Val is flying through space on a mission to activate an array which will link the communications system of the Carreras system to that of the rest of the galaxy due to a nebula which normally blocks communication. As they prepare the droid which will perform the task, the vessel is attacked as it enters the nebula and crashes to an unknown planet where they are attacked by a Sith.
He battles the Imperial Knight eventually overpowering him, but is then killed by his own apprentice who takes the opportunity for advancement. The droid activates, recording the situation before trying to leave the planet, but is shot repeatedly until it ceases to function.
Later on the world of Carreras a young woman is making a deal in a scrapyard where she finds the wreckage of the droid, meanwhile above the world the communications array is boarded by an Imperial Knight calling himself Yalta Val although it is a different man to the Knight seen earlier.
In the cockpit of their little ship, the woman, Ania, and her business partner a Mon Calamari, Sauk, are working on the droid when they discover and activate a lightsaber. Ania thinks it will pay for their way out of the scrapyard, where Sauk is happy where he is and thinks it will bring trouble, as his race are now seen as scum and beggars.
On Coruscant the leaders of the Triumvirate, Gar Stazi, K'Kruhk and Marasiah Fel discuss the array. While on the array itself the Imperial Knight warns the Governor that there is a Sith presence in the system, telling her that they attacked and slaughtered his team, demanding control of the security forces to track down the Sith and locate his stolen lightsaber.
Ania and Sauk take the lightsaber to a dealer who wants nothing to do with it throwing them out of his shop, where outside they are spotted by security forces. They flee down a side alley but the security confront them, so Ania guns him down identifying herself as Ania Solo.
Meanwhile chained in a jail cell a helmeted figure is fed slop and sarcastically addressed as Master Val. . . .
High Points : So we're into a totally new story, although the timeframe and some of the minor characters are identifiable. We're introduced to Ania Solo, a scrapper, and definitely not a Jedi as she guns down a cop. She's obviously supposed to take after Han, but while she shoots first, she's shooting a security officer, so seems to be a darker character than her ancestor.
A touch I really liked was the comment we got about the Mon Calamari, their homeworld destroyed, this proud species are now seen as "Refugee Scum" and "Flotsam Beggars", the Galactic Alliance obviously hasn't found a new home for them, and they are now drifters, it saddened me, but I really liked the world building.
Low Points : I know they're setting Ania up as a rogue element, taking after Han Solo by shooting first. But she guns down a security officer who is just doing his job. He's not being overly aggressive or dangerous, just a cop trying to arrest what he's been told is a Sith Thief.
I also have to ask what happened to the riches of Alderaan. She's a descendant of Han and Leia, who had considerable riches from running the galaxy at various times and from the royal line of Alderaan. Did they fritter it away, or have so many descendants that the share that Ania inherited was tiny?
So what do you really think ? : It's an interesting start to the story, a Sith impersonating an Imperial Knight to stop a system being connected to the rest of the galaxy. I'm guessing there's a larger plan to take over the Carreras system, and they're not just doing it because it's evil. It's got my interest, and I'll be interested to see where they take Ania, if she is a stone cold killer, or just so impulsive that she makes horrible decisions.
Final Words : I have to comment on the artistic style as not really being to my taste. It's not bad, so this isn't a negative, but it's a scrappy style that looks a little messy. However with Ania being a scrapper, and the system she's in being a backwater world, the style works in setting the tone as this isn't the best place to be, it's murky, grimy and sets the tone, because they use much cleaner lines when we're in the council chambers on Coruscant. An interesting choice and worth commenting on.
