Legacy (2013) 9

What is it ? : The escape pod containing Ania, Jao and the Mon Calamari and Quarren workers who have been helping them sinks deeper into the oceans of Dac surrounded by skeletons of Whaladons and Mon Calamari who were poisoned and died there. The Communications Droid which has been following and helping Jao begins sending out a distress signal changing the signal to be more effective from underwater.
In Hyperspace AG-37 and Sauk race to rescue their friends, emerging above the planet and locating the signal, so they plunge their ship into the waters of Dac, grappling the pod and pulling it back into space, where the vacuum and cold sterilises the poisons within the water.
On Coruscant, Yalta Val receives a distress call with his own ID, and discovers that it's from Jao Assam telling them about the Sith and construction in Dac, so interrupts a meeting of the ruling council to tell them, but Marisiah thinks that Jao Assam is unreliable so ignores it, but Gar Stazi takes note and speaks to Yalta later asking him if his Knight students would like a training mission.
Landing on the construction ring around Dac, Ania, AG-37, Jao and Sauk are reunited, but while the others don't want to go against the entire ring themselves, Jao wants to do something so the others leave. The Quarren with them warns that any action against the Sith leads to the families of the slaves being punished, and he is worried about his son, so rushes off.
The Quarren wans Darth Luft, asking for his sons freedom in exchange, but Luft throws him to his death instead, which starts a slave revolt as many were friends of his, with Jao fighting his way through the guards towards Luft.
AG-37's ship comes under attack from some of the fighters built in the ring, but one mysteriously explodes, and they realise that Gar Stazi's fleet has arrived in response to the distress call. . . . .

High Points : A solid action packed issue, while Ania abandoning Jao seems out of character when she was the one who demanded they do something about the Sith, they do explain this by having her realise that Dieben had been lying and Wredd isn't here, so she's not as concerned about dealing with Luft.
I also liked the touch that the Communications Droid that is accompanying Jao, was originally Yalta Val's, so when it sends the distress call, it sends it with his ID code. Something easily forgotten, but a nice touch.

Low Points : Firstly I have to comment on Darth Luft, his name bothers me firstly reminding me of the German Name for the song 99 Red Balloons (99 Luftballons), but also his design bothers me. He's a Sith Twi-lek, but instead of looking cool like Darth Talon did, instead he looks like a goth jester, with his Lekku looking like the belled horns on a jesters hat. But that's minor, and just a personal annoyance which stops me taking him seriously.
So AG-37 and Sauk have raced across the galaxy to rescue Ania and Jao, and then when Jao wants to fight a Sith, they decide to leave him, as he must find his own destiny? Ania got Jao to rebel against the Imperial Knights, earning himself a death sentence, but now when he wants to fight a different bad guy to the one she personally has decided they should deal with, she just leaves him behind? This really seems out of character, they could have given them a mission to go get help, or to cause problems outside by strafing and attacking the fleet while it's unmanned. But instead just had them leave their friend behind.

So what do you really think ? : A solid issue once again, with the set up out of the way, this Legacy series really manages to have action and move the story ahead. With some nice moments, especially with the Quarren, Tikin, who ends up turning on the heroes because their actions endanger is son, but then his own death provokes an uprising against the Sith, becoming the martyr that the slaves needed to fight against their captor.

Final Words : With Gar Stazi's fleet in attendance, I can't see the Sith lasting long, so this story will be wrapped up in the next issue, closing off this story arc in five issues, and matching the number of issues in the graphic novel format release. Which also gives us the name of the compiled release, "Outcasts of the Broken Ring".

Score : 8.5/10
