Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 22:Just Like Wes

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are training with Padawan Wes Vinik, who shows them a spinning move he knows, which Kai is impressed with and attempts to copy, spinning wildly and striking the ground. Wes advises Kai that he doesn't need to copy Wes in everything he does, he can be just be himself.
Wes's droid, R0-M1, arrives carrying a box of Coaxium which needs delivered, after Nubs almost drops it and is warned by Wes that it's volatile, the Young Jedi offer to deliver it for Wes, and depart in their Jedi Vector Starfighters.
However, they are watched by Gossi, one of the Comet Raider Pirate Gang, who informs the rest of the Comet Runners about the Coaxium, who ambush the Young Jedi in space.
Kai leads the Young Jedi through an asteroid field, and spotting a tunnel through one of the asteroids too small for the Comet Runner's ship, he leads them through it, losing the Comet Runners.
They land and meet up with the Mon Calamari, Zepher, who they deliver the Coaxium to, and he tells them he needs it for a ship he's just finished fixing, but the Comet Runners arrive to steal the Coaxium.
A fight breaks out, but when Kai attempts to duplicate Wes's move from earlier, he again fails which allows the Comet Runners to grab the Coaxium and escape from the hangar, sealing the door behind them.
Kai feels like a failure, but his friends assure him that he can choose to not copy Wes, but to be himself. He realises that he has friends to rely on, so they pile boxes to escape from the hangar, and spot the Comet Runners ship, they catch up with the Comet Runners, and manage to grab the Coaxium back. But when Kai has to decide to try Wes's move again, he instead chooses to rely on his friends, and they escape from the ship, sealing it's door behind them.
They return the Coaxium to Zepher, and return to Wes, telling him of their adventure, and Wes tells them that he'll teach them his spinning move, but they must add their own style to it, and begins teaching them once again. . . .

High Points : A pretty fun little story, the Comet Runners try to steal the Coaxium, thinking the Young Jedi will be easy targets, and the kids prove themselves capable. The fact that Wes's special move he's teaching them is basically "spinning, that's a good trick", which looks good but would be silly in actual combat, is fun.
And the continuing growth of the Young Jedi Adventures world continues, with not only Wes, but the Comet Runners, and Zepher all making returns.

Low Points : Usually the Young Jedi Adventures uses it's own soundtrack, but this episode borrows heavily from the rest of the franchise, with the asteroid field music being borrowed from a similar scene in the Empire Strikes Back. While familiar music, I didn't like it, it felt borrowed and felt cheap, as if they're cutting corners and not using their own soundtrack any more, just using stock music they already own.
Also the Comet Runners give up trying to steal the Coaxium, instead of just waiting for the Young Jedi to leave, as Zepher prove himself completely incapable of protecting himself. So they could just return and take it.
And the mocking of Kai and the Young Jedi that the Comet Runners do, seemed a bit silly, as the Young Jedi have beaten them on a couple of occasions, so telling them that they're just kids really doesn't fit with the existing history between them.

So what do you really think ? : I kind of enjoyed this one, it's back to only being 10 minutes or so long, so there's not much here, but by using existing characters they managed to get into the story and get it told without much set up. Even if it does feel like several episodes we've seen before, where Kai tries to copy an older Jedi, fails, and learns that he just has to be himself.

Final Words : So, as always, as a kids show Young Jedi Adventures has to have a moral to it's story, and this time it seemed to have several, Just be yourself, seemed to be the one that was set up, but also, you can rely on your friends seemed to be the consequence of Kai just being himself.

Score : 8/10
