Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 26: Tenoos Fastest

What is it ? : Nash Durango is explaining the Monopod Races which are coming to Tenoo for the first time, these are similar to the later pod races, except they only have a single engine each, but are manned by two crew, usually the pilot and an engineer droid.
They meet her favourite racer, Wiston Freng, but Nash gets shy and has difficulty talking to him, but when offered the chance to help service his monopod she begins showing her knowledge.
While they are distracted Freng's rival racer, a Dug Jaj Omie switches off Freng's Engineer Droid, JK-46, and dumps it in a box.
With the race about to start, Freng asks Nash to be his engineer, which she agrees to, although isn't sure of the controls. The race begins and Freng is leading the race, but Omie swerves into the pit lane and takes out his pit crew, so they recruit the Young Jedi to take their place, meaning that in the 3 lap race they can refuel, which they do.
On the final lap, Omie drops something into Freng's engine causing it to malfunction, and Nash panic's and causes them to fall behind. Freng tells her that he used to be nervous all the time, and Nash is the best racer on Tenoo so deserves to be here. She restores their engine, and they race past the slower racers again, causing them to crash so there is only Freng and Omie in the race.
But they have a jammed steering fin, and Nash is too small to reach it, so Freng and Nash swap places and he repairs the damage, leaving Nash in the pilots seat to take them over the finishing line to a win after Omie also crashes putting him out of the race.
They are handed the trophy for the win, and Freng gives Nash his helmet, telling her use it to remember that she belongs there. . . .

High Points : A pod racing episode, and it's action packed and looks pretty great. I'm not sure why they felt it necessary to change the pods into monopods (single engine, dual crew), perhaps to preserve Anakins reputation as one of the few humans to take part (but given it's hundreds of years earlier, things change).

Low Points : But it's very heavy on the references to the pod race in The Phantom Menace, with the rival being a Dug, the same race as Sebulba, the pod racers looking the same designs, the commentator being a Toong (the same race as Ben Quadinaros) and Nash even wearing the same helmet and goggles as Anakin did.
It's also odd that they win by being the last racer still going, as all the others have crashed, and they really don't make an issue of the races being dangerous, with Nash's mothers both watching happily with no concerns.

So what do you really think ? : It's a decent enough episode, the race is well done, although obviously a total rip off of the Phantom Menace pod race, but for a 14 minute story, it's pretty well done.

Final Words : And the moral of this story is, believe in yourself, simple as that.

Score : 7.5/10
