Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 28: The Firehawk Feud

What is it ? : Draiven Bosh and his droid, K-2PL, are looking for Firehawks in the forests of Tenoo as Draiven wants to add one to his collection as he will be able to charge highly for people viewing the animal. But they get separated in the fog.
Lys, Kai and Nubs are walking through the forest when they hear K-2PL shouting for Draiven, and use the force to clear the fog, and begin tracking Draiven by the wrappers of the ration packs he keeps snacking on.
They find him on one of the rocky spires, attempting to capture a Firehawk chick, but the adult arrives and carries him away. Lys isn't keen on helping Draiven, but remembers that Jedi are supposed to help people, so uses the force to convince the chick to carry her up to where Draiven has been dropped and surrounded by adult Firehawks.
He falls and Lys takes the chick into a steep dive to grab him, but it needs rescued by it's parent before it hits the ground. The adult blocks Draiven from leaving, until Lys gets him to say he will leave and not hunt Firehawks.
Draiven then gets bothered by insects and rushes off into the forest as Lys shouts to him that the insects are attracted by movement and K-2PL chases after him . . . .

High Points : The sad thing about this episode is that I actually like the character of Draiven Bosh, while he's an antagonist for the Young Jedi, I find Lys opinion to be too extreme. He wants to capture animals, not to hurt them, but to put them on display. He doesn't intend any harm to the animals, but Lys is totally against this making her look like a bit of an extremist, when she doesn't speak out against people eating meat, which admittedly does come across as a childish and undeveloped opinion.

Low Points : The element that really annoyed me in this episode is the Firehawks ability to understand speech, not only does Lys convince the Firehawk chick to help her, but Draiven has to bargain with the adult to be allowed to leave. These are supposed to be animals, and while I could forgive Lys speaking to the chick as a manifestation of her using the Force to control it's mind to help her, the second is just hostage negotiations with a bird.

So what do you really think ? : I really didn't think much of this episode, it feels like we've done this before, and while most of the other antagonists from season one have had their redemptions, Draiven who is perhaps the least evil of them all still hasn't. I really think having him prove his protection of animals prove useful would make an interesting story, if not one that the writers want to tell.

Final Words : So the message of this episode seems to be the simple, Animals belong in the wild, not captivity.

Score : 7/10
