Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 33: Upgraded

What is it ? : Wes Vinik and the Young Jedi are summoned to the world of Deppani, where a starship factory has been getting robbed, so they are to help guard the factory against any further intrusions.
That night when patrolling, Kai discovers that it is Taborr Val-Dorn robbing the place, and the two fight, Taborr is winning, but Nubs, Lys and Wes arrive and arrest him.
They secure him, and Lys, Nubs and Wes go off to see if they can find Taborr's associates, Pord and EB-3. While they are gone, Kai questions Taborr why he as Prince Cyrus Vuundir would rob a factory, and Taborr tells him it is to protect his planet, by stealing the ship parts he can upgrade his ship to protect Vuundalla against the Ganguls.
Kai begins to empathise with Taborr, but spots in a reflection in the window that he is picking his handcuffs, so the two fight again, with Taborr getting the upper hand and locking Kai in the room alone.
Wes, Nubs and Lys arrive and Kai races off in pursuit of Taborr, who by now has arrived back at his ship with the part. Kai catches up and the two fight once again, but this time Taborr gets his cloak trapped and Kai takes the part locking Taborr within his ship which then flies off under the control of Pord and EB-3, leaving Kai on the surface as Wes, Nubs and Lys arrive.
They return the part to the factory to the operators thanks, and tell them that Republic Droids will be arriving to protect them from now on, but Wes notices that Kai is upset and stands with him on the beach reassuring him that hoping people will do good isn't a bad thing. . . .

High Points : So Taborr's back, and that's a good thing, he's actually a villain with a motivation we can follow and come across as having more personality than the main characters. The episode itself is action based, following a series of short fights between Taborr and Kai, so is fast moving and keeps your interest.

Low Points : Taborr getting trapped by his cape at the end of the episode feels really weak, as he can simply take the cape off, it's not like he's been trapped by an arm or leg. But he futilely struggles to free his cape, allowing Kai to escape with the part, it just seemed a weak end tot he episode.

So what do you really think ? : I liked this one, but was definitely on Taborr's side, I believe his story as it is backed up by all the history of the character we've seen before. So when he says he's stealing this technology because as a child prince he can't fortify his world, but as Taborr the pirate he can arm his ship and provide protection for his world. The Jedi meanwhile aren't trying to provide protection for the world, instead obeying corporate interests and protecting a factory. Although it glosses over these facts, it does seem a very modern and political episode at its heart.

Final Words : And the moral of this episode as told is, believing the best in someone isn't a weakness even if you get taken advantage of because of it. Where I see the moral the Young Jedi are actually following is to obey your corporate overlords and protect the rich.

Score : 8/10
