Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures: Season 2: Story 41: The Bounty Hunter and the Thief

What is it ? : The Young Jedi are helping Ansen Strung capture an animal, when Kai is contacted by Ace Kallisto, she asks to speak to Lys as she is transporting a creature and it doesn't seem to be particularly well.
They bring Ansen along as he also has knowledge of animals, and on board Ace's ship they find a lizard swimming in a tank, and Lys realises the water is too cold leading to the lizard being sluggish and sleepy. Ace isn't keen on Ansen being around as she has bad experiences with bounty hunters.
Outside, the Gungan Thief, Tooba Jinx is planning on stealing the lizard, so he causes a distraction with a gong droid, and when they all rush outside to deal with the droid, he sneaks in and grabs the lizard.
When they return they notice the lizard is missing, and Ansen gets on the ground sniffing around for clues and spots drops of water which they track to the river side, and spot Tooba emerging on the far side of the river with the lizard in a glass backpack.
They borrow speeder bikes from some kids and give chase, but he goes on foot through a rocky area they cannot follow, so they continue on foot catching up with him at the top of a waterfall. He dives in, and although she doesn't really trust Ansen, they rely on his jet boots for them to follow.
Catching up with Tooba just as he arrives at his ship, they try to get the lizard but it escapes, and both Tooba and the group have to give chase as it leaps into the river.
Tooba being a Gungan swims quickly, and Kai, Lys and Nubs cannot keep up with him, but Ace and Ansen get over their differences, and use Ansen's jet boots to catch up with the lizard and catch it.
Tooba isn't happy, and leaves in his ship, and they return to Ace's ship, where she admits that ex-bounty hunters might not be bad, and Ansen tells her to not push it. . . .

High Points : Ansen while being a bit of a clownish character, is fairly appealing, and the action moves along nicely, with a bit of a chase continuing throughout.

Low Points : While Ansen's return is welcome, the same cannot be said of Ace, she is actually hostile towards Ansen because she is a criminal, and he used to catch criminals. And this is made out to be an acceptable thing. She objects to being caught for her crimes, and it's portrayed as a problem on both sides, as if it's him that somehow misbehaved for bringing people to justice.
And when the Young Jedi borrow two speeder bikes, the bikes are the same design as we've seen a lot lately, with obvious blaster cannons mounted on them. So young kids eating slushies have heavily armed vehicles. I know it's Star Wars, but this seems an odd message to send to kids.

So what do you really think ? : Not a terrible episode, but it really doesn't seem to have been thought through properly, and makes Ace out to be too much of a goody goody character, making Ansen seem bad in comparison. Firstly I was waiting for the twist where she wasn't taking the lizard to a friend, but had stolen it, but that never came. And because they're making Ace look nice and friendly, anyone who might want to arrest her in the past is bad. So Ansen the ex-bounty hunter is shown in a bad light, even though all he did was stop criminals, just like her.

Final Words : And the message of this episode seems to be, work together no matter your differences, or it might be trying for an ACAB message.

Score : 7/10
