What is it ? : The Young Jedi are helping Marlaa Jinara in her junkyard, when Rex Minuu's Spider Droids approach and spot something they want on JG-1. The Young Jedi need help moving a large piece of scrap, but JG-1 is moving slowly and weakly, Marlaa commenting that perhaps his power cells are run down because he requires special and hard to find ones due to his great size and strength. They check his power cells and find one is missing, and spot the Spider Droids making off with it.
They attempt to chase, but the Spider Droids lose them, but one remains at Rex command to watch the Young Jedi, while the others return the Cell to him.
Rex finishes building a new droid, Apexx, which requires the power cell, and they orders the other Spider Droid to lure the Young Jedi to him.
Kai is about to give up, and comments that it's not like a Spider Droid will just drop down in front of them and lead them to Rek, when the Spider Droid drops down and leads them to Rek. When they arrive at Rek's ship, Kai comments that it is exactly what happened.
Inside they find Rek, and he sets his new droid on them, he observes that they are small, and they quickly learn that he is quick and strong. But even though he learns to respect Nubs strength, Lys notices that he is slowing down, so they lead him outside and get him to chase them, causing his power cell to run down, so he deactivates. They retrieve the power cell and tell Rek that they would help him find another, but he cannot steal, but he rejects their offer, instead taking Apexx back to further upgrade him, and add an even more powerful power cell.
The Young Jedi return the power cell to Marlaa, who charges it and installs it back in JG-1 who returns to normal operation, as the Young Jedi collapse with exhaustion. . . .
High Points : For him being a villain, I really like Rek. He's set up for a redemption arc, and I have a feeling that we'll discover a reason behind his friendship with droids, probably as he was abandoned by his family, but I find his character interesting and compelling. The episode itself is fine, with nothing truly outstanding or terrible about it, although I did find Kai's comment about a Spider Droid dropping from the sky and leading them to Rek not being likely, followed by it happening, followed by Kai's realisation that there's something wrong about that, to be amusing.
Low Points : Without going back, JG-1 was built from scrap in Marlaa's scrapyard by Taborr? So these rare, valuable and powerful energy cells, were just lay around as scrap for him to find?
And Apexx seems set up to turn on Rex at some point, as he questioned whether the Jedi who he saw as weak were really the ones who'd beaten Rex before. So he seems on the edge of realising that Rex is weaker than him, and set to turn on his master.
So what do you really think ? : Given that Rek seems to want to help Droids, I find myself wondering if the Young Jedi had just pointed out he'd hurt JG-1 in stealing the power cell, whether he himself would have come up with a solution?
Final Words : And the moral of this one, conserve energy? Don't wear yourself out? Don't Steal? It seems to be mainly teaching that Apexx was defeated by making him use all his energy and shut down, so don't fall for obvious tricks?
