Darth Maul – Black, White & Red 4

What is it ? : We start in the action, a Senator receives a warning that an assassin has been detected, and Maul wipes out all his guards and then the Senator. As Maul leaves he is contacted by Palpatine who criticises him for killing everyone as he was supposed to just kill the Senator. Palpatine sends him to Ah Re Won on the Outer Rim where the ruins of a Sith Temple exist, telling him to meditate and to focus himself, to rid himself of the rage and anger which causes him to perform mass slaughter instead of the targeted attack that Palpatine wants.
Arriving on the world he books into a hotel, which offers him a room and two meals, asking what else he could want, to which Maul replies "Quiet". He begins meditating at the temple which is just behind the hotel, but after a short while he is disturbed by an argument, the hotel owner is arguing with the towns Sullistan Mayor who owns his own hotel, he is demanding money which the hotel owner gives him, but the mayor wants the hotel out as it is blocking the view of the ruins from his establishment.
Afterwards Mauls meditations are disturbed by construction droids the mayor has deliberately set to cause a lack of sleep to the hotelier and guests to try to cause it to close down. Late that night the Mayor tries to set fire to the hotel, but Maul catches him, and shortly afterwards the construction droid falls quiet.
The next day the mayors droids report he is missing, and Maul returns to the temple to meditate, discovering a large creature eating the remains of the mayor, which Maul decides covers his actions putting them onto the beast.
A while later, some hunters arrive, headed by Prince Afolonkin, they find the tracks of the beast in the temple and begin tracking it, shouting and partying as they hunt, they corner the beast and it's young, but Maul slaughters the hunters, saying only "No, more, noise!"
Later a starship arrives, containing the Princes father, the Pirate King of Sector 9, who demands to know what has happened to his son and the other hunters, the droids tell him he was eaten, and also left an unpaid debt, so the Pirate King guns them down, and decides to punish the settlement, rolling out a tank which starts blasting the buildings.
The hotelier flees, boarding a starship and launching into the sky, as the Pirate King demands his people fire, but the gunner is already dead at Mauls feet. The King demands to know who he is, but Maul just tells him all he wanted was quiet.
Maul starts slaughtering the King's men, while the King boards his ship to flee, but Maul uses the force to throw the tank into the ship destroying both.
He then returns to the temple to meditate as the town burns behind him, Palpatine arrives, smirking as he says that he did ask Maul for Stillness and Quiet. . . .

High Points : I do like this story, the escalation as Maul tries to get peace and quiet, but can only deal with it with his one tool, destruction. He's not even that talented at anything else, as it's only by pure chance that the beast eats the mayors body, covering up Maul's murder of the man.
I think it might have worked better if Maul was truly trying to be a better person, but it's almost comical as distraction after distraction turn up to disturb his meditation, it's like he's chosen the most commercially busy Sith ruins to meditate within, it seems like this place probably has a brochure somewhere enticing people to visit, the initial problem with the mayor is because he wants his hotel to have a view of the temple ruins.

Low Points : But it does repeat the problem with this comic series, it's just a repeated pattern of problem turns up, Maul murders it, there's no variety, no imagination, and no horror. For a horror series, there's nothing here at all, he doesn't stalk the people, attempt to scare them away, he just murders everyone who annoys him.

So what do you really think ? : Out of the entire series, this is the best. As mentioned above there's a comical element to it, as everyone turns up being obnoxious and annoying, and we know exactly what will happen, Maul will murder them. It's obvious, but satisfying to see these characters get their comeuppance. Never before have so many people deserved murdering by Darth Maul.

Final Words : So that's all 4 issues of Maul, Black, White and Red, and it's been a massive disappointment. Where the Vader, Black, White and Red was flawed, but was packed with loads of great ideas, giving us a slightly different view of Vader. This series offers us no such interest, there's less stories, they're all basically the same, and for a series whose opening line is "DARTH MAUL STARS IN HIS VERY OWN HORROR BLOCKBUSTER! ", there's no horror. Do I even bother with Boba Fett, Black White and Red?

Score : 8.5/10
