Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi : 4 : Nawaan Attacks

What is it ? : As the fleet of Asteroid Miners prepares to jump to Hyperspace, Nawaan's fleet arrives above Bibin which is still burning from Asteroid strikes. The ships with refugees jump to Hyperspace, but Kwana's Asteroid Miner is speared by Nawaan's ship and his forces rush aboard to kill the Jedi.
Kara wants to face against Nawaan to find the truth about her father and he awaits her in a canteen aboard the Asteroid Miner and he recognises her as Zhima's daughter. He introduces himself, telling her that Zhima is his master, something she refuses to recognise as she believes she is his only padawan, and they begin to fight.
Nawaan is impressed by her skill, and tells her that he wasn't taught by Zhima but learned an important lesson the time he saw Zhima kill Tsutara. As they fight Kara shatters Nawaan's mask, and she recognises him as one of the students of the Jedi, and we see that Nawaan took Tsutara's lightsaber after the fight.
Meanwhile back at Nawaan's base, Ethan uses the distraction to reach Lah Zhima's cell, but cannot breach it with his lightsaber, but Zhima uses the force to rip the entire side of the cell free and they head to the hangar. Zhima explains that he was here because long ago his actions warped the mind of a young Jedi and he is trying to repair the damage he once did. But as they are about to leave aboard a fighter, Gennoh arrives.
Nawaan blasts Kara from a balcony using the force, and she catches a cable, leaping to fight him once more, but Margrave arrives, and Nawaan explains that the mask he wore helped him experience the nothingness he felt when Zhima killed Tsutara. As they fight, Kara distracts Margrave with an aggressive attack, leaving him open to Nawaan striking a killing blow.
In anger she cuts Nawaan's lightsaber in two, and he takes Margraves as he leaves, as he breathes his last Margrave gives Kara the bundle of Lightsabers he has carried and fades away into the force.
Ethan and Zhima feel Margraves death, and Gennoh gets battle droids to fire at the pair, but 99-99 takes them out, and Ethan gives his lightsaber to fight Gennoh while he gets sent to help Kara. The lightsabers blade becomes silver and Zhima shortens it, and the two fight as Ethan escapes in the fighter.
Kara attacks Nawaan, and he ignites Margraves lightsaber and the blade changes to silver. He explains that the blade is forged by Lord Zhima and reflects the users heart, and the silver blade shows he has achieved the same level as Zhima had the day he killed Tsutara. The two fight, and
The battle droids invading Kwana's asteroid ship begin to retreat as explosives are planted aboard, and Kwana orders an evacuation. He realises that Kara and Margrave aren't aboard Margraves ship, but Gramps tells them that Kara and Margrave can take care of themselves and launches the ship.
As the ship explodes around her, Kara is awoken by a voice, and she jumps in a ship and launches just as explosions rattle the ship and knock her unconscious once more.
Nawaan returns to his vessel, and is told the miners ships have been destroyed although a number escaped, he orders hunters to track down and kill the last of the Jedi, and now he must conquer the galaxy, and his ships hyperspace jump away.
Ethan's ship arrives in the wreckage, but passes by Kara's without noticing it. . . .

High Points : So the main part of this is discovering what is going on with Nawaan and Zhima, although the mystery isn't completed yet. We knew that Zhima struck down Tsutara because Tsutara seemed to be up to no good, and had attacked Zhima first. Everyone that witnessed it assumed that Zhima had gone evil and done it, but Nawaan was a youngling (or maybe young Padawan) at the time and took a different lesson, not that Zhima was evil, but that the Jedi were weak and incapable of saving the galaxy, so he has taken that task upon himself much like Vader believed at first he was bringing peace to the galaxy.
We still don't know what Tsutara was really up to, and why if Zhima wasn't turning evil why his and Nawaan's blades turn silver, but the show is giving us clues and revealing more and more each episode in a most delightful way.

Low Points : As should be obvious from the description above, a lot happens in this episode, and things just seem to happen for story reasons. Why is Nawaan alone on the Asteroid ship as the attack starts?, why does Kara encounter him?, the only reason seems to be so they can talk and progress the plot. Why does Gennoh remain behind and Nawaan takes a new sidekick with him? So he can confront Zhima and Zhima will use a lightsaber so we see both his and Nawaan's become silver.
It races along, and there's plenty going on, but so much just happens for no other reason than the plot requires it.

So what do you really think ? : I enjoyed this one, the fight between Kara and Nawaan is interesting, utilising their environment and more force powers than just lightsaber combat, it's visually appealing and the dialogue and flashbacks threaded through it keep it interesting. And while the episode is a bit of an infodump, as Nawaan monologues at Kara, and Zhima storytells to Ethan, the fact that the action keeps going and the main plot continues stops it feeling like we're being told rather than shown the story.

Final Words : So we're halfway through the series, Margrave is dead (but speaking as a Force Ghost if it was indeed him that wakes Kara), and he's given Kara his quest to recreate the Jedi Order even though her quest is to rescue her father and find out the truth, which I believe we'll discover is told "from a certain point of view" so is very different to what everyone believed it was.
I have to admit I'm a little confused how nothing can be so powerful as Nawaan believes, but I guess we'll find that out in the next 4 episodes.

Score : 8/10
