What is it ? : The Imperial attack on Mon Cala has begun, and Vader and the Inquisitors have made it to the end of the docking platform they landed on. The Ninth Sister questions whether Vader knows where to go, and he leads them towards the Royal Palace, the Sister objects saying that King Lee-Char will have fled, but Vader knows Lee-Char and knows he won't have fled.
And we get a flashback to when Amidala, Ahsoka and Jar-Jar all worked alongside the then Prince Lee-Char to defend the world during the Clone Wars. And we see that Vader's belief is true as Lee-Char is leading the defence from his throne room, and he contacts Tarkin to try to get him to call off the attack, but Tarkin just calls for him to surrender, and after the message turns to his subordinates telling them that the Empire has studies everything Mon Cala has, so there are no surprises here.
However deep in a cave beneath the surface, the robed figure who has been advising Lee-Char, tells his people of Anakin Skywalker, how he was the greatest Jedi during the Clone Wars but shows them footage of him leading the attack on the Jedi Temple afterwards.
The robed figure reveals itself to be a Iktotchi Jedi, and messages and convinces Lee-Char to continue to resist the Empire, even though the King thinks that he should let the Empire do their investigation into the death of their Ambassador because they will find nothing. Lee-Char orders Ackbar to lead the defence of the north, and Raddis to lead the defence of the south, ordering the use of his second plan to stop the Imperials.
However when he turns around, Vader and the Inquisitors are already there, and Vader uses the force to smash Lee-Char against a pillar. However his plan is already in motion as massive whales leap out of the sea causing a tsunami which sinks the city.
Above, it is reported to Tarkin that all of the above surface installations have been destroyed meaning the Empire cannot use them as staging grounds for their attack, making things far more difficult. Tarkin asks on the status of Vader, and is told that he isn't responding as we see Vader's body sinking into the black waters deep below the surface. . . .
High Points : A reasonable tactic from the Mon Calamari, who live beneath the surface of the waters of their world, so everything floating on the surface is just for interacting with other species. So destroying all that disadvantages the Empire, and offers no such disadvantage to the Mon Calamari.
And we're seeing something interesting between the Jedi Advisor, he's on a crusade and that crusade isn't necessarily for the betterment of Mon Cala. He wants to take out Vader, and he's willing to manipulate the Mon Calamari into helping, I'm not sure if he's using the Mind Trick on King Lee-Char, but the king does seem to change his mind very easily to the Jedi's suggestions.
Low Points : While the segment showing us that this Jedi advisor might not be up to the standards of the Jedi we've seen before, and he might not have other peoples welfare at the top of his priorities and be willing to manipulate others to get his goals. It does drag a bit, as he puts on a video presentation to let his followers know who Vader is, and who he was, showing them clips of him fighting as a Jedi, and then showing him leading the attack on the Jedi Temple. But this is all stuff we the reader know already, it's no surprise that Vader used to be Anakin Skywalker, that he switched from one side to another, so this feels like a lot of wasted space.
And, a bunch of Whales creating Tsunami's big enough to destroy the surface city of Dac? While I do like that they've used the old Legends name for Mon Cala as a city name, the idea that even a vast number of big whales could cause a city destroying Tsunami, across much of the surface of the entire planet. It just made me wonder if the writers looked at the animal performances at Sea World, and thought that they killed the audience rather than just splashing them.
So what do you really think ? : It's moving the story forward into a conflict between the Jedi Advisor and Vader rather than the actual war, which is pretty interesting, and I did like seeing Tarkin planning the attack and reacting to the situation, showing actual military knowledge and capability. But too much of it was spent telling us things we already knew, the flashback by Vader, the powerpoint presentation by the Jedi Advisor. We know that Vader was here helping the Mon Calamari as Anakin, and unless we're really getting a payoff for all of this, then this is just wasted space.
Final Words : The flashback including Jar-Jar I found amusing, because yes he was in that Clone Wars story about Anakin and Amidala helping the Mon Calamari fight off the Separatists. But the way they've frames the images, to draw attention to Amidala, as obviously she's the most important person to Vader as he remembers this, but with Ahsoka still prominent, as she is also pretty important to Vader, and Jar-Jar is also there, as Vader remembers he was there, but very far down the list of being important.
