Dagger thorn | Imperial capital ship | Ront Byrnloo (Human Thug) | Fixers Landspeeder (Modified SoroSuub X-34 Landspeeder) |
What is it ? : Kai and Lys discover there is a famous geyser about to erupt which will be spectacular, so they go to get Nubs so they can watch this together, but find that he is ill with the "sniffles". They find out that the leaf of a Yara plant will help, so they set out on speeder bikes to get one.
Travelling down a river, they discover they don't know which way they are supposed to be going, Kai wants to rush off but remembers being told by Master Zanna to remember teamwork so listens to Lys and she notices leaves flowing downstream so they follow that direction.
After further challenges which they have to work together to overcome, they reach the Yara Plants, but they are guarded by a large Gangul. They sneak to the plants, but alert it, so scare it off with their lightsabers.
Going back they serve the leaves to Nubs as a tea, and then all head off together to watch the geyser erupt along with their other classmates.
High Points : It's a fine little adventure, with a heavy handed message of teamwork, but one that isn't too offensive. The kids have to work together to find the plants, and then work together to scare off the Gangul.
Low Points : Lys main personality trait displayed so far in the series is that she knows a lot about animals, so it's a little annoying that in this episode that really isn't on display. To balance the story and have her rely on Kai as much as he needs to rely on her, she is made indecisive. Combined with Kai's rash nature, she provides the insight where he provides the momentum to get on with things.
This isn't a particularly good message in my opinion, as it puts two negative traits against each other, making the other person compensate for that negative trait. So their deficiencies are balanced by one another. A more positive message for kids I think would have been if they had needed each others positive traits to succeed, sending a message that sometimes you need people who can do things better than you, rather than a message of sometimes you suck.
So what do you really think ? : The episode is fine, and I enjoyed it well enough. For a fairly short story there was a lot which happened, so it keeps moving and entertains, especially at the level it's aimed at.
Final Words : The problem I've moaned about above, is one which is quite common in kids shows. Where a competent female character is weakened to make her the equal of a more rash (and to be honest stupid) male character. Which I find a little problematic. Not only for weakening Female characters which are written initially as smart, but also by writing Male characters who are incompetent and stupid.
