What is it ? : The Young Jedi have joined a droid journalist making a broadcast for the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts, they have travelled to the world of Yamradi to view the creatures known as Chylaroo.
Lys is a fan of these broadcasts due to her love of animals and she speaks in depth about this to the droid, SF-R3 {Aree}, and his camera droid, Cam. They spot some Chylaroo which are extremely cute, but Aree is grabbed by a large Bird.
They track Aree to a burrow where the bird lives, but it chases them off before they can rescue the droid. Lys realises that the bird cannot eat droids, so wonders what it is doing, and realises that Aree's head resembles some large berries that grow on Yamradi and concludes that the bird has just mistake the droid for a large berry.
They cover themselves with berries to distract the bird, but it takes them to feed it's chicks and they realise that it's just a mother trying to feed it's young, so the berries are used to feed the chicks.
They befriend the mother bird, and free Aree who asks Lys what she wants to name this unknown species of bird, and from it's home in burrows, it's diet of berries, she names it a Burrowberry Bird as Aree ends his broadcast to the galaxy. . . .
High Points : As with many episodes of Young Jedi Adventures this one is extremely simple, the droid reporter gets grabbed by a bird and the kids have to work out a way of getting him back. The message of this episode seems to be that just because an animal seems to be hostile, it might actually be you that's causing it to protect it's nest or young. (there's probably a better way of phrasing that, but I think that gets the message across).
Low Points : It's possibly done for comic effect but the Young Jedi make one of the silliest decisions I've ever seen in this episode. They realise that the bird is interested in the berries which grow on the planet, and instead of taking it some berries to feed it and distract it while they rescue Aree, they instead decide to disguise themselves with the berries. Perhaps they think it'll chase them to get the berries, but covering themselves in food, just kind of makes them food. Made me wonder if they thought that the bird was just collecting the berries because it liked how they looked, without thinking that it might actually eat the berries.
So what do you really think ? : Another okay episode, it doesn't overstay it's welcome, and it's developing the characters. For example when Lys is thinking about why the bird has taken Aree, Kai encourages the others to wait as Lys is thinking, which shows us he accepts her slower way of doing things and that her thoughtfulness is respected and rubbing off on the more impulsive Kai.
Final Words : The series has quickly found it's feet, it knows what it's doing already and has established it's characters. And while what it's doing isn't particularly imaginative, the episodes do entertain at the level they're written for, and are competently done.
