The Acolyte: Season 1: Episode 4: Day

What is it ? : The Wookiee Jedi Master Kelnacca walks through the forests of Khofar returning to his home inside a crashed starship. He begins preparing food, while our attention is brought to 3 circular symbols on the wall.
At the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Osha watches as class of Jedi being taught with staffs, and waits for Jecki to finish to say goodbye. She has been cleared of the killings, and intends to leave Coruscant.
On Khofar, Mae and Qimir arrive on a starship, Qimir has been here before and knows where Kelnacca lives so has been told to guide Mae there. They discuss their Master, and what Qimir's relationship is with him and the fact that neither has seen his face or knows his identity.
At the Jedi Temple a group of Jedi watch a hologram of Mae fighting, and agree that she has been taught by a Jedi, Ki-Adi Mundi suggests telling the Jedi Council, but is over-ruled as they would be forced to tell the Senate, which would undermine confidence in the Jedi. Master Rwoh tells another Jedi to extract Kelnacca, but Sol argues that with Osha they could bring Mae in, and Rwoh reluctantly agrees.
Qimir and Mae continue through the forest, discussing what their master means by Mar having to kill a Jedi without a weapon, that perhaps the wording could allow a loophole by perhaps starting without a weapon, but taking the Jedi's. They also discuss Osha, and Qimir tells Mae of Osha's liking for Sol.
As Osha prepares to leave, Sol catches up with her, and explains that the only way the Jedi will let him try to bring Mae in alive is if she comes with him, and she agrees reluctantly. Aboard the starship a larger group of Jedi are briefed, and Osha questions Jecki about a smaller alien which is watching her, and Jecki explains it's a tracker called Bazil.
They arrive at Khofar and speak to locals which indicate that Kelnacca is in the forests, so they set off guided by their tracker. They encounter some warped looking trees, which Osha touches one of, only for the deformity on the tree to be revealed to be a large insect which Sol dispatches when it attacks Osha.
Mae and Qimir pause for a rest, Mae explaining that if she is to fight a Wookiee she cannot be exhausted from the hike, as they speak Qimir realises that Mae isn't committed to their task, so decides to get some water while she rests. When he returns, he is caught in a trap and Mae explains that her sister is more important than their mission, so she intends to surrender to Kelnacca to be reunited with Osha.
When she enters Kelnaccas home, she realises that he is already dead, and that her master must already be there, and hears the Jedi arriving outside.
The Jedi call on Mae to surrender, but they sense something from behind Osha, and a dark figure appears, igniting a Red Lightsaber. It throws Osha out of the way, and as the Jedi charge to attack, it sends them all flying with a gesture from it's hands . . . .

High Points : The focus of this episode is more about Mae and Qimir, we begin to have the relationship between them and their Master revealed and begin to see a greater role for Qimir within that relationship. As while he downplays his connection, it is obvious that he doesn't just owe the master a favour, he has skills and influence beyond that.
But we also get further growth of the relationships between Osha and the other Jedi, with Pord continuing to be antagonistic, but revealing a softer and more concerned side, and the friendship between Osha and Jecki growing.

Low Points : While we find out a lot of information about Mae and Qimir's relationship with their Master, it's all just hints and unspoken clues towards what is going on, so we really don't find out much. I believe this is because what we're finding out will prove to be misleading, so there can be a revelation later which doesn't contradict what we've seen, but isn't exactly what was said either. But this does lead to much of these scenes feeling fairly pointless.

While obviously there's more flashbacks to come, to reveal what really happened with the fire on Brendok, the Jedi which all the pre-publicity focused on just seem to be dying, with both Carrie Anne Moss and the Wookiee now dead. Using the pre-publicity to mislead us is a fair technique, leading us to believe that those 2 characters were going to play a major part in the story, and then surprising us with their deaths. It does feel a little cheap though, fool me once by killing Carrie Anne Moss in the first few minutes of the show, but fool me twice by killing off the Wookiee without him meeting the others, then I'm going to feel annoyed that you're using the same trick twice.

So what do you really think ? : So it really looks as if Qimir is the Master, he's already on Khofar, was away from Mae for a time, which is when he could have been killing Kelnacca, and then is supposedly trapped when the Master turns up at the end of the episode.
But this seems too obvious, and the use of the massive force push hints that the Master is actually one of the Witches from last episode, perhaps Mother Koril, who did seem the most angry and dark side of the witches.

Final Words : At around 30 minutes, this episode is shorter than the others, and while there's a lot going on, it does feel too short, as the information we receive is intriguing, but doesn't actually tell us much, leading to the episode feeling like a lot of nothing.
But obviously it can just all be the set up for the second half of the series and for better things to come.

Score : 8/10

I know that people were complaining about how short the episode was. I admit it should have been a little longer, but considering the buildup to the end, and how it's a cliffhanger preluding to the big fight we've been expecting since the previews, I can give it a pass.

However, I was expecting the big fight to be in the series finale, not next week. Unless we're going to get another big fight in the series finale. One where we see Vernesta Rwoh use her lightwhip.

Here's my biggest complaint to date. We're introduced to four new Jedi who seem to play a central role in this story. And since these four visited the Coven, we can see why they're key players. However, the only one we're getting know a lot about is Sol. Indara was introduced in the first episode, and while we got a good fight scene with her, she was killed. The next one - we only saw him meditating in isolation, hoping to absolve himself of guilt. He only got it after taking that poison. Otherwise, we know next to nothing about him. And new, Kelnacca appeared at the end of Episode 2, only to get killed off between Episodes 2 and 4. Right now, the three dead Jedi seemed more like placeholder or cannon fodder Jedi - brought in to an episode only to be killed without giving much about their backstories - than real Jedi. And I've seen that before with the following examples: Ima'Gun Di, Sha'a Gi, and Shon Kon Ray. You can look them up in the Wookiepedia to see who they are and see why I call them cannon fodder Jedi
