The High Republic: The Hunted: Chapter 4: Baron Boolan

What is it ? : The heroes have tracked the missing child to a space station Shingcu Station, but the Jedi are all feeling uneasy and Lourna Dee points out that it is the presence of lots of the Nameless. Which means that the Jedi will be useless on this mission, so they decide that Lourna Dee, Tey Sirrek and Sskeer will board the station to rescue the child, as while Tey and Sskeer are force sensitive, they are to a lesser degree than the other Jedi.
They board the station and discover Nameless being stored in glass tanks all in a state of dissection, as Baron Boolan has been experimenting on them, but Lourna realises they're still alive, so opens fire.
The blaster fire draws attention, and Baron Boolan sends people to stop the boarding party. But as they fight Sskeer and Tey realise that Lourna is missing.
However, Baron Boolan is about to begin experimenting on the missing child when Lourna attacks, she can't believe that the Nihil have stooped so low as to be experimenting on children. Boolan is prepared for a fight, but Lourna sets off detonators she has planted on her journey here, and Boolan is trapped by falling debris.
As Lourna flees, Boolan releases a Nameless to hunt her down, and her weapon is knocked out of her hand and although she asks the child she just rescued to kick it towards her hand, the child is paralysed with fear. However the Nameless is cut in half by a lightsaber, and Lourna realises that despite the mental attacks of the Nameless, Keeve has come to her rescue.
Lourna tells her that she's a better woman than her, but they'd better run as the other explosives she's set are due to go off. . . .

High Points : It's an interesting idea to put the Jedi out of the action due to the nameless, especially as Sskeer has dealt with them before. And it's a set up for an interesting mission with Tey, Lourna and Sskeer working together, when Lourna has a habit of aggravating Sskeer who at the best of times has temper issues. But they make very little of this, and it all devolves into combat straight away, due to Lourna.

Low Points : However, they comment on Sskeer only being resistant to the Nameless, but as we saw at the end of the original run of this series, the disease he has which is cutting him off from the Force turned out to be his superpower, allowing him to resist the Nameless. Now perhaps this is because these are super nameless altered by Baron Boolan, or more likely it's because they forgot Sskeer's actions before (just like they forgot he only had one arm).

So what do you really think ? : It's a nice action piece, with lots going on and it actually feeling like the heroes are doing something and driving the plot, rather than is all too common in Star Wars comics of it feeling like they're reacting to it instead. It makes them all seem heroic, and although circumstances are against them, they're fighting those odds.

Final Words : I wasn't sure where to put this, so here will do. While I like Lourna Dee as a character, I do find her alliance with Keeve to be really odd. She hated Keeve, and was a powerful member of the Nihil, but seems to have just changed sides. Now while it might be that she just doesn't like Boolan, so it's a temporary alliance, I can't see the Nihil being particularly happy about her betrayal. It's not like Keeve has a special power for making alliances, like Zayne Carrick for example, Keeves original personality trait was finding help from the most insignificant of people, but that's been long forgotten.

Basically, it's nice to have Lourna around, but it makes no sense plot wise.

Score : 8.5/10
