What is it ? : Continuing from the last issue, Marisiah is down and Cade attacks Darth Nihl along with his former master Wolf, as Wolf urges Cade to not use anger as it is a weapon of the Sith. But Cade says he'll use any weapon that works.
Antares discovers that Marisiah isn't dead and carries her back to the ship, where they discover that her wounds are grievous and there's nothing they can do for her, so urge the Jedi to help.
Jariah helps in the battle and Cade is surprised but quickly realises that it's only because he couldn't convince Deliah to abandon Cade, so the heroes retreat aboard the ship as it launches. The Sith watch and tell Talon that she will have to inform Krayt of her failure.
Antares tells them to get them to Bastion where Marisiah can get treatment as quickly as possible, because if the ship doesn't get her there in time he will kill them all.
Cade volunteers to help Marisiah, but Antares punches him, blaming him for her getting hurt in the first place. A fight almost breaks out, ending only because the Jedi see no point in it, and Astraal begs everyone to stop fighting and help Marisiah.
As Cade prepares to help her, Wolf warns him about the Dark Side, because the healing is forcing his will on the Galaxy, a Dark Side trait. But Cade doesn't care as he won't let anyone die for him ever again.
Energy crackles around them, and Marisiah is almost completely healed, and Wolf tells Cade it felt as if he was taking the death into himself, but Cade tells him to go away and we see a glimpse of his eyes having turned red.
Later on Bastion, Cade leaves his bed with Deliah, and returns to the ship, being met by Wolf and Shado. They ask him if he's leaving his friends behind and he tells them that Jariah and Deliah will be better off here, the Empire owes them a reward for rescuing Marisiah, and Deliah will get a good job based on her engineering ability, and Jariah can't be trusted now he knows of the bounty on Cade's head.
He asks them if they're not staying as Roan Fel has offered them an alliance against the Sith. But they don't trust him, even though they've been reassured he wasn't behind the attack on Ossus, it was still the Empire under his command that attacked, so it changes everything. Something Cade agrees with.
As they fly off Wolf questions Cade's piloting ability, as the last ship he saw him fly exploded, and Cade responds that Wolf is a funny guy, but no one likes a funny Jedi.
Meanwhile on Coruscant, Talon apologises for her failure, and is prepared to die for it, but Krayt says she has brought knowledge which is worth far more than the failure, that a Skywalker still is alive, and has abilities which might be useful to him, so wants him found.
High Points : The first part of the issue continues the mess of a battle that filled most of the last issue, with people running in and out of the ship seemingly at random. But it improves vastly in the second half of the issue, with us discovering how healing is a Dark Side power, and it laying out distrust between the Jedi and Roan Fel, who currently are natural allies against the Sith, but previous actions lead to the Jedi leaving.
I really liked the way they've twisted healing into a Dark Side power, that simply healing someone is fine, but bringing them back from the point of death is imposing your will on the galaxy, going against the natural order of things, so part of the Dark Side. And Cade showing Sith eyes after healing Marisiah is a wonderful little touch.
Low Points : The confused battle continues to make no sense, and loses all threat when the heroes just leave as soon as the ship is repaired. There's no desperate last minute gamble, or trick they have to perform to confuse their enemy, they just jump on the ship and leave.
Cade comes across as a total asshole in this issue, almost starting a fight aboard his own ship because he doesn't explain how he can heal Marisiah, when the Imperial Knights have already asked the Jedi to help heal her. And then sleeping with Deliah and abandoning her, feels abusive and not a real relationship.
So what do you really think ? : While it gets far better in the second half of the issue, the battle just makes the issue feel messy and inconsistent. There was no real threat in that battle, and even Marisiah being wounded feels like it's just an excuse to get Cade to use his healing powers.
Speaking of those, they've introduced an interesting plot point, with Krayt suffering from the Yuuzhan Vong parasites in his body, and discovering that Cade has healing powers, so might be of use to him since the former Sith Lords refused. The bad guy needing the hero to heal him does seem like an interesting twist, relying on the hero to be a good guy and heal someone, but the power itself belongs to the Dark Side.
But I have to ask, since Marisiah was on the ship, and the ship was in hyperspace when Cade heals her. How did Talon know he healed Marisiah? How has Krayt learnt of this ability? Perhaps there's a spy on Bastion, but the issue certainly makes it look like it's Talon that's told Krayt, and there's no way she could have known.
Final Words : The names continue to be an annoyance. The amount of times I've confused Jariah with Deliah when writing this review are far too many (and I'm pretty certain that Cade and Jariah didn't sleep together as I wrote initially), with Marisiah just adding to the confusion. And sadly I think we're stuck with them all for the run of the series. But I'm certainly praying for the death of at least one of them to help me keep track of the characters.
Oh, and I don't know why Luke is on the cover, as he isn't even mentioned, never mind makes an appearance in this issue.
