Star Wars: Legacy: 8: Allies

What is it ? : Another flashback issue, 7 years before, Moff Nyna Calixte co-ordinates the Imperial Fleet as it defeats the Galactic Alliance. Emperor Roan Fel speaks to her about their Sith Allies and how she has been their point of contact and she has betrayed him, but she points out her allegiance is to the Empire not to a particular man. He draws his lightsaber and asks why he shouldn't kill here there and then, and she says it's because killing an unarmed opponent is a Sith action, and he abhors the Sith.
The tension is broken as news comes in that the Galactic Alliance has surrendered, but Fel points out the Jedi will not, but Calixte says they will have no choice. And Fel says that the Empire once destroyed the Jedi Order, but he will not allow it to do so again, but we see the attack on Ossus occurring at the same moment.
Darth Maladi and the Admiral of the Imperial Fleet, Veed return to Coruscant, and Veed and Calixte aren't happy about the attack as it is a breach of Fel's orders, but Maladi points out that they knew Fel had to be replaced, leading to Veed believing this is the moment the Sith promised, that he would become Emperor. As Maladi leaves, he asks why Calixte doesn't want to be Emperor, but she thinks it is to obvious a target and she wants to be the power behind the scenes. As they talk, Calixta realises something, and probes Veed on exactly what the Sith promised him.
In Roan Fel's quarters he discusses with some Imperial Knights the need for getting rid of Veed, and keeping an eye on Calixte, when she enters. They are worried that she has overheard their plans, but she reveals she knew what they were planning anyway, and warns Fel that the Sith intend to kill him at the next Moff's council.
He asks why she is telling him, and realises that if the Sith take over with no major threats, they'll be free to replace all of the Moffs, but if Fel remains free and a threat to the Empire, then they'll need the bureaucracy to fight his forces, keeping Veed and Calixte safe for the moment.
We see the scene in the throne room as we have seen it before, but we see the real Roan Fel escaping at the same time, and as they fight their way to a ship he senses as the Knights in the throne room die.
Afterwards, Maladi confronts Calixte, telling her that she knows it was her that warned Fel and allowed him to escape. But Calixte says there is no evidence, and she needs Calixte to manage their forces against Fel now. Maladi agrees, and tells Calixte that under Sidious she would have made a good Sith, but Krayt's Sith are a new breed, which Calixte confirms after Maladi has left, will be the blade that kills them.

High Points : I am enjoying the way this series is returning to certain scenes and answering questions, so we'd seen the attempt to kill Roan Fel before, but knew he'd used a duplicate to not be present. But now we've had it explained how he knew of the attack, which I'd actually presumed because he knew not to trust the Sith, but turns out he's not that wise and had to be told that the Sith were going to kill him and take his Empire.

Low Points : So we're having a major new character introduced with ties to all the story, Calixte, who is working with the Sith, but doesn't like them or trust them. Which makes me wonder why? She's commanding the Imperial Fleet, and is on the Moff's council manipulating everyone, why does she work with the Sith, to keep the same job and power?
Perhaps she saw their takeover as inevitable, but we're not shown that, she just seems to be being duplicitous for the sake of being duplicitous. But perhaps we'll see future motivations for her character.

So what do you really think ? : And interesting enough issue, but once again, why are the side stories more interesting than the main plot. As soon as Cade is out of the story things get far more interesting. I know they're trying to make him a different type of hero, but it's really difficult to get interested in him when he's acting like an asshole most of the time.

Final Words : My memories of this series are much better than a re-read seems to be showing, whereas often I've read through comics which I didn't have great memories of, and found them to be fascinating and wonderful tales. Legacy has some brilliant ideas in there, but doesn't carry them through very well. I can only hope it improves, and it was those later issues I remember fondly.

Score : 8.25/10
