Star Wars: Legacy: 12: Ghosts, Part 2

What is it ? : It rapidly is discovered that the Yuuzhan Vong are protecting the Jedi Relics hidden beneath the Jedi Temple on Ossus. Their leader, Nei Rin, reveals that they worked on Ossus having been invited by Kol Skywalker to redeem their image by restoring the biosphere of Ossus. They returned to the world just after the attack by the Sith and found Kol's body, so in his memory dedicated themselves to protecting the relics.
They wonder how far the Jedi have fallen that Cade is one of them, and Wolf points out that Cade is not an example of all the Jedi.
Cade leaves, and Wolf follows and they discuss why Cade came here, which causes high emotions and breaks into a fight, Wolf thinks that Cade came here to die, but Cade really came to be close to his father, as he can hear his voice, but can't feel his presence, as if he's avoid him. So Cade thinks his father is blaming him for his death, and Wolf reveals that he misses Kol as well as he was his teacher and then friend.
Wolf guides Cade in meditating, and hears the story of how he was left floating in space after his fighter was destroyed during the attack on Ossus, and how he was rescued by the Pirates, pretending to be from another group and becoming friends with Jariah Syn. Cade sees a vision of Luke Skywalker, who tells him that while he might ignore his destiny as a Jedi, he can't ignore his own sins, that the Jedi they captured as Bounty Hunters and handed over to Rav is now on Coruscant being tortured.
Cade agrees that he needs to fix this, so announced his departure, so the Yuuzhan Vong give him R2-D2, who they have been maintaining and updating for return to his family. So Cade and R2-D2 board his ship and set course for Coruscant.

High Points : The high point of this issue for me is the moment that he reveals he didn't come to Ossus to die, he came because he is haunted by his fathers spirit, but can't communicate with him, coming to the conclusion his father is disappointed in him. Luke then appears to him to point out the only thing Cade has to be ashamed of is his more recent actions, leading to Cade actually becoming motivated by helping someone.

Low Points : The big twist the writers thought was going to be shocking, was the Vong, who are introduced and you're led to believe they're attacking and still the bad guys. But that twist really doesn't work, as we've been told they were helping to fix the damage to environments they'd done, and it was only the Sith who ruined that.
So people we've been told are good guys, turn out to be good guys, really isn't the twist they think it is.
And while I've always been a fan of R2-D2 (when I was a kid and we were playing at being in Star Wars in the schoolyard, I wanted to be R2), his addition to the story feels like pandering to me. Remember this guy you liked, well here he is, so you must like this too.

So what do you really think ? : Well at least they're trying to redeem Cade, they've made his callousness into a shield he's made from the events that happened to him, and now he's set on a path to save the Jedi he himself captured which led to them being handed over to the Sith.
This is a definite improvement, as he's not had anything for you to get behind, as even non-heroic characters have some redeeming features such as wit, charm or power, whereas Cade has displayed none of those. Coming across so far as a self centred, rude, loser, which makes it difficult to have any interest in his adventures.

Final Words : So it looks as if they're bringing things together again. As we know Jariah and Deliah have both been taken to the Sith Temple on Coruscant where Cade is now going.
Although it does seem very odd that the whole Marisiah, Roan Fel, and Fel Empire storylines seem to have been left behind. The early storyline did seem a little crowded with different storylines, but just leaving them hanging doesn't seem like the right solution, but I suppose we'll see them brought back in at somepoint in the future.

Score : 7.5/10
