Star Wars: Legacy: 20: Indomitable, Part 1

What is it ? : On board the flagship of an Imperial Fleet designated to deal with the remains of the Galactic Alliance fleet headed by Gar Stazi, Darth Azard kills the Kel Dor admiral in charge for his failure to perform the task. The admiral is replaced by a Human Admiral Valan, who orders all aliens removed from his fleet.
Meanwhile around Dac, where the Mon Calamari are constructing a new type of Star Destroyer for the Empire, two Mon Calamari discuss how Gar Stazi could do with the new Star Destroyer. As they land, the are immediately approached as to why they were observing the construction without authorisation, with the pilot slipping away onto a YT-2400 which they take to Gar Stazi's fleet.
Gar Stazi is told of a plan to steal the new Star Destroyer but it reminds him of an ambush at Caamas which led to the destruction of the Galactic Alliance and him taking his fleet into exile.
On board the Star Destroyer, Admiral Valan is told by a spy about the two Mon Calamari, and how one of them is attached to Gar Stazi's fleet. He deduces their plan, that the older one will sabotage the defences on the ship yards, while commando's take control of the Star Destroyer, then the Alliance fleet will jump in to protect the Destroyer as they escape into Hyperspace.
However, he plans to use this as a trap, with soldiers planted to reactivate the defenses, extra troops aboard the Star Destroyer to take control back after the Alliance thinks it's seized the vessel, and reinforcements to trap the Alliance Fleet between them and the shipyard defences.
Things occur exactly as he planned, and he delivers an ultimatum to Gar Stazi to surrender or be destroyed, to which Gar Stazi declares "Caamas" . . . .

High Points : While I've skipped over it, the background information told in this issue is excellent, how the Mon Calamari, have been forced into a lesser role on their own planet, with the leadership role once shared between them and the Quarren, now totally put in the hands of the Quarren due to the Mon Cal's known position on the Galactic Alliance.
That even though they have been under control of the Sith Empire, they've been smuggling supplies and parts to Gaz Stazi and his fleet.
I also really liked the racism of Admiral Valan, which continues when he puts the spy that informs on the Mon Cal plot into prison, demanding they get that "thing" off his bridge. Valan is an easy guy to hate.
Finally, I do like the way it shows the competing plans taking place, as Admiral Valan works out what the Galactic Alliance will do, we see their plans working, and then as he counters that we see the trap snapping shut, leaving us ready for any other counterplans to take place in the next issue.

Low Points : This issue takes place simultaneously with the previous 2 issues, and while it's nice to see other things happen across the galaxy which don't totally revolve around the hero characters. We are getting more and more characters to keep track of. Darth Azard for example, couldn't he have been one of the Sith we've already been familiar with? Although given he's a Quarren, that might come into play with the politics of Dac!

So what do you really think ? : Once again, Legacy provide some of it's most interesting stories when the main characters aren't involved. And we're getting a totally new range of characters, none of whom have appeared in the series before, to add to the groups we've had introduced separately in the past who haven't yet gone on to be a part of the story (although Joker Squad who had their own issue (back in issue 4), were apparently the Stormtroopers searching Ossus 2 issues ago, although they weren't really named then). But whatever happened to Marisiah and Roan Fel, who felt they were going to be so important to the series and are just forgotten about (at least for the moment).

Final Words : A better than average issue, but is mainly a stand alone story set in this time period. It's told well, and helps flesh out the galaxy as we see what else has been going on over the past hundred years (although everything does seem to just be within the past 10 years since the attack on Ossus), and I am interested in seeing how this story finishes off, presumably with a counter plan from Gar Stazi.

Score : 8.5/10
