Star Wars: Legacy: 26: The Hidden Temple, Part 2

What is it ? : The Jedi Council meets to discuss Cade's plan, talking about comparisons between what they all did during the Clone Wars and an actual assassination. While Cade and Deliah relax on the Mynock and what assassinating Krayt means for Cade.
Elsewhere in the Hidden Temple, Jedi Master Rasi Tuum meditates in one of the gardens, when he suddenly realises he's under attack, Jariah Syn throws Yuuzhan Vong Razor Bugs at him, and although the Jedi is skilled, Jariah is prepared, but the battle ends when Rasi pins Jariah against a wall using the force demanding to know who he is.
Jariah tells him that he recognises Rasi as the Jedi who killed his father, telling a tale of seeing Rasi fighting against Jariah's father and Rav, Rav manages to escape with Jariah, but Jariah's father was killed by the raging Cathar Jedi.
Rasi remembers what happened earlier, seeing the two pirates raiding and taking a girl prisoner, fighting to free her but failing. He wonders if she is okay, and Jariah's memories come back of how obviously his father and Rav were being pirates, and that the girl was kept as a slave and treated badly. And with the truth revealed, Jariah and Rasi part.
Marisiah Fel and Azlyn Rae speak, with Azlyn's feeling for the Jedi re-emerging, however she has sworn to by loyal to the Imperial Knights, but she wonders if any Imperial Knights have ever gone their own way, to which Marisiah tells her, one, and his life prove short.
Cade and Shado Vao take speeder out into the wilderness, where Shado reveals that he is going to force Cade to recognise the darkness within himself. They fight and Cade gets the upper hand, revealing that his healing power can magnify the cracks he finds in someone's aura, causing harm to them, but he chooses not to give into the dark side.
The Jedi Council reveals their decision, that they will not support an assassination attempt, they foresee that if Krayt dies the chaos will lead to more deaths and perhaps another even more powerful Sith to emerge.
Cade doesn't like this, and prepares to leave in the Mynock but finds that Antares Draco and Ganner Krieg have moved their Tie Predators and gear aboard the Mynock, offering their help, and Shado Vao has decided to come with them to ensure Cade doesn't fall to the Dark Side, and they depart on their mission to kill Darth Krayt.

High Points : We finally discover what problem Jariah has with the Jedi, blaming one of them for the death of his father, and although it's over very quickly, I do like the way it's resolved by getting Jariah to recognise that his father was a Pirate and not a very nice person. The fate of the captured girl being the point that finally proves it, while he might have idealised his father, the fact she was taken as a slave and how she was treated is evidence that his father was not a good person.

Low Points : So we get to where was obvious last issue, the Jedi won't help, but Cade is going to try to kill Krayt anyway with the help of the Imperial Knights, and Shado Vao is also along for the ride to stop Cade going to the Dark Side. But I really don't get Shado's thinking at all, firstly he takes Cade out into the wilderness to attack him, with the idea that this will make Cade angry proving his connection to the Dark Side. When Cade shows him that even in that situation he can control and restrain himself, Shado now decides to accompany Cade on the mission, as he thinks he can stop Cade falling. But Cade just prove he can beat Shado in a fight, and Shado doesn't seem the best person to keep Cade calm, almost exactly the opposite, he aggravates him.

So what do you really think ? : A necessary issue, but one where nothing much seems to happen, Jariah's defining personality trait, that he hates Jedi, now seems to be resolved. But it wasn't a reliable trait either, as he could easily overcome it, he knows Cade is a Jedi, but is fine with him, he's had Azlyn and Rawk on the same ship, but has been fine with them, it really only seemed to be mentioned to try to insert some tension "Will Jariah attack the Jedi?", "No, no he wont!".

Final Words : So perhaps now we can get on with the story, except no we won't, because we've got a one shot story as Legacy seems to do between all it's story arcs, and then we're back to the Vector storyline, which we saw begin with Zayne Carrick in the Knights of the Old Republic Comic, and now we'll see it end with Cade Skywalker in Legacy! I've skipped over the middle, but I hope it makes sense because if I ever do cover those comics, it'll be at some point in the future.

Score : 8/10

Now I can post my thoughts.

Jariah - despite the outcome, I can honestly say that Jariah has good reasons to hate Rasi. He was justified in wanting to avenge his father. Just as Boba Fett was justified in wanting to avenge his father by trying to kill Mace Windu. I could see Jyn Erso wanting to kill Cassian Andor and that general who ordered Cassian to assassinate her father. She would have been justified. And if she had killed bothe of them, the Rebels would accuse her of being an Imperial spy. I could see this as her response:

Saw asked me if I could stand to see the Imperial flags flying everywhere. I said, "It's easy if you don't look up." I honestly hate the Empire and you. Both of you have robbed me of my family and ruined my life. I wanted to spend the rest of it hiding in the shadows. Not getting any attention. But you presented me with a chance to find and rescue my father. But instead you killed him. What I just did wasn't about politics or military matters or anything you're thinking. It was about an individual seeking justice or vengeance against people who have wronged her. There's a third group out there. A group that wants nothing to do with the Empire or the Rebels or whatever you call yourselves. They just want to live their lives free of fear and danger. As far as we're concerned, you and the Empire can shove yourselves down the Maw Cluster. I want nothing more to do with any of you. And if any of you try to find or recruit me again, I'll kill you, regardless of whom you are.

Imperial Knights - right here is the proof of why I don't see the Imperial Knights in a good light. For all intents and purposes, they're like the Inquisitors, Emperor Hands, and other Dark Jedi who served under Palpatine. They expect total loyalty and blind obedience. Strict and unbending. They would have flourished under Palpatine's rule. If Leia and Jaina could have seen what their descendants from Jaina's line would have become, I don't think Jaina and Jag would have gotten together. And in a way, their being strict and unbending is very similar to the Jedi Council of the Prequel Era.

Jedi Council - While I'm happy to see T'ra Saa and K'Kruhk, I'm not happy with the results. It's as if upon becoming part of the Jedi Council, they undid all the changes Luke made in response to the mistakes the Prequel Jedi Council made. This future incarnation of the Jedi Council is the Prequel Era Council restored. They took a huge step back, and that's going to cause more problems in the future.

I think Cade went on a rant about why should the Jedi bother helping the galaxy anymore. How many times have they done that, only for the galaxy to turn their backs on them. Everything the Jedi have done - they didn't do it for the rewards or thanks. They did it because it was the right thing. But it would have been nice if for once, the galaxy came to the aid of the Jedi for a change.

I remember Han thinking about getting his family together and just abandoning the New Republic after Leia nearly lost her life on Duro during the Vong War. I think Cade has reached that point in terms of no longer caring about the Galactic Alliance, the Imperial Remnants, or even the galaxy. He just wants to kill Krayt and be done with it.

Which leads to another flaw in the current Council that's the same as the Prequels. The current one refused to go after Krayt because they feared something worse would happen. That's very much how the Prequel one was before the Clone Wars. Yoda and the others were more interested in maintaining the status quo rather than changing or trying to do more to make the galaxy better. They feared that any such action could lead to a disastrous future. It all comes back to something Zayne Carrick and maybe Anakin Skywalker tried to get the Jedi to see and understand. They can stick to their code and be cautious about the future as they want. But there's light and dark, and there's right and wrong. No matter how they justify themselves, to turn a blind eye to atrocities and suffering, to turn a deaf ear towards those who are crying out in pain and for help - THAT IS WRONG. No ifs, ands, or buts. For Zayne, it was the Mandalorians. For Anakin - the Hutts and the slavers. Now, it's the Sith. Krayt and the Sith must be stopped. No arguments. No debates. And if the Jedi are unable or unwilling to do this, then the Jedi no longer function as they should. It's time for them to step aside, or even dissolve, and allow others to step forward and do what needs to be done. What must be done.
