What is it ? : Darth Wyyrlok is heading into the Deep Core in a starfighter, in a flashback we see the aftermath of Cade's escape from the Sith Temple, Krayt ordered his wounded follower, Darth Nihl, experimented on by Darth Maladi, his severed arm to be replaced by a Yuuzhan Vong organism. And Darth Talon is not to be healed, but to prove herself worthy by recovering on her own. But the battle has also weakened Krayt, so Wyyrlok set off to see if he could find a way of healing his master.
He arrives at the tomb of Darth Andeddu to make a deal with the Sith Lords spirit, if he can prove himself to the Sith, Andeddu will provide knowledge on the way he himself had moved between bodies and survived death. Wyyrlok is to take Andeddu's Holocron to where his body rests in his tower on the world of Prakith.
He travels there and is attacked by followers of Andeddu who remain alive over the centuries feeding off the dark side within the tower, he defeats them using the Force to appear as several versions of himself, and the leader submits to him, leading him down into the chamber where Andeddu's crypt lies.
Opening the Crypt he finds Andeddu's body, but refuses to place the Holocron on the body to restore Andeddu's body to life, instead deciding that the knowledge he seeks will lie within the many books and scrolls in the chamber.
The follower leaps onto the crypt and Andeddu's soul transfers to him instead, transforming him into the Sith lord. The two battle, Andeddu throwing the rocks of the crypt at Wyyrlok, who in turn causes lava to erupt. The two attempt to find weaknesses, fears and doubts within each other, but the lava swings the battle as Andeddu sees the flames consuming the papers of his life's work, this terror allows Wyyrlok to win the battle, revealing that he used illusions and the lava was not real.
Wyyrlok reads some of the scrolls and comes to the realisation that it is doubt that is killing Krayt, doubt he will see the completion of his plan, and a solution to that doubt must be found, and Wyyrlok leaves Prakith in his starfighter returning to his master. . . .
High Points : The consistent use of fear as a weapon against the Sith is an interesting one, we were told that Fear leads to Anger, Anger to Hate, Hate to Suffering in the prequels. But the idea that fear itself is a weakness, that the Sith need to be confident in their power, so the fact that their power is based on their fears originally provides a critical weakness.
They gain massive power, but ultimately can be destroyed by the fear of losing it, I wonder if this will be explored further, either by Cade exploiting it, or Krayt mastering it.
Low Points : This side story seems a little pointless, and Wyyrlok seems an odd Sith. He seems honourable, and happy to serve his master, not chained like Vader, but committed to protecting and helping Krayt. This actually makes him likable, and I can see him fitting in to Krayt's Sith, but I don't see the elements which make a sith within him, he doesn't seem to have fear, anger, hate or cause suffering.
So what do you really think ? : Legacy has had an interesting method of storytelling, with so many side stories breaking away from the main plot and fleshing out the galaxy which are great to read, but have little to do to the activities of Cade and the Sith. Looking back at the issue telling the story of Joker Squad, and while they've been background characters in a couple of issues since, the characters and story in that issue have had no influence beyond it. But was great to read never-the-less.
However, this issue is the weakest of these side stories. Nothing really happens, and it's not that interesting or exciting, especially just when the main storyline seems to have made a decision on a direction it want to go in. So this issue just makes me want to get back to Cade.
Final Words : And from this side story we go straight into another, but this time 4 issue long, side story as we return to Vector. I really hope they tie the end of this into the main plot, as it would be interesting instead of us being left waiting for 4 issues for Vector to get wrapped up before we finally get back to Cade trying to kill Krayt, if Celeste Morne becomes a real force against the Sith and has a major effect on the main plot before her story ends. But I guess I'll see soon enough.
