What is it ? : We are told that ten years ago a Star Destroyer went missing sending reports of monsters, it has remained hanging between hyperspace lanes waiting. Aboard it is Celeste Morne with the artefact containing the Sith Lord Karness Murr which allows her to control Rakghouls. Celeste is keeping Murr prisoner, but he tells her he is just waiting for another force user to take control of.
Meanwhile the Mynock is travelling through hyperspace, Jariah is speaking with Deliah and is sceptical of Cade's plan to kill Krayt, not because he thinks is might fail but instead because he thinks that the idea that it will allow Cade to be free of his destiny as a Skywalker is unlikely, but worth a try.
Ganner Krieg and Antares Draco are practicing lightsaber skills against Shado Vao, considering themselves superior due to them being Imperial Knights. While Azlyn Rae attempts to explain herself to Cade, who won't listen considering her actions as an Imperial Knight to be betrayal. But Cade suddenly has a vision of Celeste Morne, and the Mynock lurches out of Hyperspace appearing next to the Star Destroyer containing Celeste.
They panic thinking that the Sith have found them, but realise that the Star Destroyer is damaged from explosions inside it, so they land aboard it as their hyperspace was damaged in the rapid transition back to real space.
Inside they discover an old ship landed aboard, and bones. Shado examines the bones, noticing they have been gnawed upon, the cause of which is revealed rapidly as Rakghouls attack.
They fight the Rakghouls, but Cade is bitten and Azlyn raked with their claws. Celeste emerges, ordering the Rakghouls back, but notices Cade's bite and Azlyn's wound, so separates them from the others. She tells them about her past, discovering that he is a Skywalker and telling him of when she encountered both Luke, and Vader as well as her history with Murr and the story of the Rakghoul plague.
She tells them that they are now infected, so all she can offer them is death, but Cade realises that he and Azlyn are infected with a disease so he uses his power to purge it from them, sharing memories with Azlyn of their youth as they connect for the healing.
Murr senses the Dark Side in Cade's healing, but Celeste realises he is fighting against being controlled by the Dark Side, so she declares that she will join Cade's crusade to kill Darth Krayt. . . .
High Points : My worry going into this issue was that it was going to derail the main plot so soon after it finally got on track, by taking us on another side story to complete the Vector storyline which has crossed 4 different titles. But it seems that those worries were completely wrong, as Celeste is joining Cade's group against Krayt and we're going on with that story. And Murr, the Sith Lord contained by Celeste seems to have his own reasons for wanting to help Cade, potentially getting closer to another Sith Lord that he can work along with.
Low Points : In the description above, I totally skipped over the activities of the others when Cade and Azlyn are separated from them, as they keep fighting Rakghouls and attempting to break into the area where Celeste has taken Cade and Azlyn. They use the Mynock's weapons, the Imperial Knights consider abandoning Cade, thinking him already dead and their bait to get Krayt now lost, so their mission over. It's pretty well done, but ultimately pointless, just providing something for them to do while the main storyline gets on.
The issue is also very full of exposition, while Celeste fills in readers who haven't been following the previous 8 issues of Vector, which is useful for me, having skipped over the middle of the story, so catching up with how Celeste interacted with Vader and Luke is very handy. But it's still a lot of pages of dialogue as Celeste tells lots and lots of background story to catch Cade and the readers up to date.
So what do you really think ? : A really good start to this section of Vector, and one that really integrates with the main storyline. Instead of it being a jarring insertion of this multi title story, it merges smoothly and gives Cade an ally in his future battle against Krayt. While there's plenty of room for double crosses, with the Imperial Knights and Shado Vao yet to discover they'll be working alongside a Jedi who contains the spirit of a Sith Lord, and of course the Sith Lord himself with his own plans to unveil, this all just adds to the story and makes it more interesting.
Final Words : I'm fascinated to see how they take this, obviously Celeste and Karness Murr, and the amulet, and the Rakghoul plague all have to be dealt with in the next 4 issues, I'll be interested to see what direction they take the main plot in the time they have.
