Tales of the Underworld: Episode 2: Friends

What is it ? : The ship their aboard arrives at a busy city, and Ventress and Lyco disembark with Lyco wondering if he can trust Ventress as they were on opposite sides during the Clone Wars. She points out she saved his life, but he counters with that he saved hers, exasperating Ventress.
A window smashes and the two encounter Latts Razzi and C-21 Highsinger capturing a bounty. After helping them, Ventress asks for information the Hidden Path, when Razzi asks why she is looking for them, Ventress tells her that she is hunting Jedi for bounties, and Razzi agrees to give her that information in exchange for help on stealing an Imperial Shield Relay Unit.
Going to Razzi's ship, she shows them information on the shipyards on Cassaro, where the unit can be stolen, they need to pass a Venator Star Destroyer and Lyco advises flying low to get past the ships quad range detectors.
Razzi takes Lyco to the cockpit to help her scramble the Venators sensors, and tells him that only Clone Troopers and Jedi know of the quad range detectors, and warns him to not trust Ventress as she is a known Jedi killer.
They land on Cassaro, and see that crawlers are carrying shield generator domes to a construction site, Ventress and Lyco get aboard one where Ventress cuts their way inside to get access to the relay unit. They are detected and Ventress holds off the Stormtroopers while Lyco gets back to the ship, where C-21 Highsinger grabs him and Razzi reveals that the bounty on a Jedi is far more than the price they're being offered for the Relay unit.
Ventress leaps aboard the ship as the Shield Generator explodes under fire from Imperial LAAT/i. She forces herself into the cockpit and they restrain C-21 Highsinger, and force Razzi to hand over the location of The Path, getting Razzi to drop them off at a Starport. Ventress asks Lycos for the information Razzi gave him on the Path, and he does as he now trusts her.

High Points : It's nice to revisit Latts Razzi and C-21 Highsinger, and to not have them redeemed, still being bounty hunters, thieves and extremely untrustworthy, and the rest of the episode plays out much like an episode of Rebels or The Bad Batch, the group needs to steal something from an Imperial base. It's fast moving and fairly enjoyable.

Low Points : But it feels derivative, we've seen all this before, and while the scene where the two are inside the Shield Generator is fun, it does seem similar to many times we've seen characters in a very similar situation, and the betrayal of Razzi and Highsinger is very obvious. But more than that, the mistrust between Lyco and Ventress is something so formulaic that we automatically know exactly how it ends, that the two will become friends.

So what do you really think ? : There's nothing terrible in this episode, but it's nothing we've not seen before, and it just seems to be time filling. We could have completely skipped this episode, with the two trusting one another after saving each others lives at the end of the first episode, and just having Lyco know where he was trying to escape to. *

Final Words : The entire format of Tales of the Jedi which made it so interesting was that it showed us parts of characters lives we'd not seen, the fall of Count Dooku to the Dark side, spread over his entire life was amazing. But this just seems to be one story telling us what happened to Asajj Ventress, and it's not even complete. The first episode starts with her dead, well it would have been nice to see how that happened, it started with Quinlan Vos being in love with Ventress, which would have been nice to see as well. Both of those seem far more interesting than what we're being shown.
While it's nice to see Ventress getting her redemption, that really feels like it should be the final episode, and we should have seen the steps towards that which we didn't get to see as part of the Clone Wars series.

Score : 8/10
