What is it ? : Strata and Ventress are riding through a canyon on four legged mounts, when Ventress reaches for a drink only to find her canteen empty, Strata offers her his, she initially refuses but finally accepts only to find it empty as well, he laughs and she playfully throws the canteen back at him.
As they travel they find a farm, guarded by 3 deactivated B1 Battle Droids, Strata knocks on the door, only for a hatch to open and blaster fire to come out, Ventress parries it with her lightsaber and wrenches the door open with the Force, and inside they find a young girl and an older man in a Repulsorlift Chair. The girl identifies them as Jedi, but the Man recognises Ventress calling her by name and tells them he served the separatists as well.
They ask him if he can guide them to Cipher Canyon, which he can but he wants help from them in exchange. Water is scarce, and the only nearby source of water is protected by raiders, he was recently wounded getting water, and he wants the pair to protect his daughter while she gets some.
They agree, and travel to the fresh water spring where they fill cannisters and attach them to the speeder the girl has brought. As they prepare to leave they come under attack by raiders, leading to a running battle, until Strata calls for Ventress to stop, as he realises that they have been stealing water from the raiders spring. Strata speaks with the raiders in an alien language, explaining to Ventress that he was taught as a Jedi that sometimes you need to listen.
They take the raiders back, and Ventress explains to the old man that they can make a deal, and Strata can translate as he learned as a Jedi. The old man levels a blaster at Strata on discovering he's a Jedi but Ventress stops him, explaining that Strata is her friend.
Later, one of the raiders leads Strata and Ventress to a cave, where a ship can be seen being boarded by a line of people. Strata prepares to go to it, when he notices Ventress isn't moving. He tells her that she could be reunited with Quinlan Vos, but she tells him she has moved on. As he moves away, he says "May the Force be with you."
She leaves the cave alone, she mounts the creature and watches the ship fly off, only to see Strata, who tells her he has decides to be with her, she tells him she wishes he was on that ship, and he offers her his canteen, which she tosses away as the pair ride off into the desert. . . .
High Points : A solid end to this story, with a journey for the characters, Ventress having gone from just hiding from the Empire, to trying to help someone, to having made a friend, possibly the first friend she has ever had. She abandons her past, even her relationship with Quinlan Vos, to make her own future. She doesn't know what that will be, but this time it will be her own decisions which shape her destiny. The old man, a veteran of the Clone Wars, mirrors this journey, going from hiding from the galaxy, to making a deal with the raiders and becoming part of something again, even abandoning his mistrust of the Jedi.
Low Points : It's all a little convenient that Strata just happens to speak the language that the Raiders do, and that a lesson as vague as sometimes you need to listen is such a revelation to Ventress and the old man.
So what do you really think ? : While this is the best of this three story arc, it's still nowhere as strong as The Tales of the Jedi series, and although it's been nice to see Ventress and what her character is up to and how she's developed since we last saw her in the Clone Wars, we're really not seeing her destiny. This story really isn't providing us with anything with enhances what we've seen before, the Tales series really seems to have lost it's way.
Final Words : So next we're onto a 3 episode arc on Cad Bane, and while it does at least cover 3 different periods across the span of his life rather than just one extended story, following the style of the earlier Tales series, I found it to be a major disappointment on first watching, but perhaps I'll find more value in it rewatching it for these reviews.
